As
gas prices
continue to hover above the $4 mark across the nation, some
car owners
are feeling the burn more than others. You might be shelling out $40 or $50 to fill up, but drivers of some seriously gas-guzzling SUVs could be paying upwards of $100 just to fill up
According to a study from
Consumer Reports
, the current national average for gasoline is $4.33 a gallon, and if you’re driving a high-capacity tank that can hold anywhere from 24 to 28 gallons, filling up is going to seriously cost you. While having a big tank is the biggest contributing factor to the $100+ price on a fillup, it should also be noted that the following SUVs also have some of the lowest fuel economies of many cars on the road today—14 to 17 mpg on average.

The biggest gas-guzzling cars

Among the models surveyed by Consumer Reports, the 2022 Ford Expedition came in first place with the most expensive cost per full tank at $122. The large SUV has a 28.3-gallon tank that will get you 453 miles of range, but the overall mpg is just 16 miles per gallon.
Trailing just behind it is the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban, which will cost $121 to fill the 28-gallon tank. The suburban has a similar overall 16 mpg and costs about the same as the Expedition with a starting MSRP of $51,600.
While the Toyota Tundra pickup truck was not officially tested in this survey, its massive 32.2-gallon tank would cost $139 to fill up at $4.33/gallon.
To summarize the two SUVs you’ll pay the most to fill up are:
  • Ford Expedition—$122 per tank
  • Chevy Suburban—$121 per tank
Even if you don’t own a massive SUV, you’re paying more than ever to fill up your gas tank. It’s during times like this that you need to be looking for alternative ways to save money on your car.
