Our favorite hardcore diesel off-road vans

The Winnebago 4x4 Revel is brought to us by one of the most cutting-edge companies in the RV scene. Winnebago is also making its way into the off-road van scene with approachable and luxurious options for the adventure-seeking crowd.
Using the 4WD version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van platform, the vehicle sports a turbodiesel V6 engine. Drivers will enjoy amenities such as a hot water heater, a cassette toilet, and a 21-gallon freshwater tank.
According to MotorTrend, “Packed with a full galley and Winnebago's space-saving ‘Power Lift’ bed (that provides extra storage underneath while at the campsite), the Revel 4x4 packs in all the comforts of home, downsized into an easy-to-handle van package that's just as capable off-road as on.”
The Sportsmobile Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 conversion is diesel-powered and features low-range gearing. Just like the Classic, 4x4 buyers can opt for a full range of sporting gear. We’re talking everything from a pop-up tent to auxiliary lighting to a snorkel. It’s also possible for the off-road van to offer a liveable interior, with either short- or long-wheelbase models.
The EarthRoamer LTi not only has an awesome name—it's a sweet spot when it comes to luxury, performance, and price.
The 95-gallon diesel tank vehicle features a “plus-size, hardened chassis, and forged-in-fire four-wheel-drive system are provided by its Ford F-550 heavy-duty platform, and it wears a generous, fully self-contained habitat on its back that can easily accommodate a family (or more) wherever the path ahead might lead, according to MotorTrend.
Carbon fiber makes up the camper body and flush-mounted side windows not only keep the cabin insulated, but also protect the driver from the glaring sun. You can also go off the grid for weeks, thanks to its roof-mounted solar array

Living in one of these off-road vans doesn’t sound half bad

ModVan used a Ford Transit canvas for an impressive lineup of off-road RVs. According to MotorTrend, “The name of the company comes from its modular design practice that allows owners to quickly reconfigure its vans (the CV1, the CV1/X, the CV1/M, and the MH1) for passenger duty, cargo, or camping—improving versatility for those who can only justify one big family vehicle in their fleet.”
In a typical ModVan, you’ll find a compact kitchen, stacked sleeping areas, and a curtained toilet. Drivers also have a plethora of options to choose from when selecting Ford Transit roof heights (hello pop-tops and cargo pods!). You can also decide between all-wheel-drive or a more intense 4x4 conversion.
Based on the four-door Jeep Wrangler, the American Safari JXL Conversion offers incredible camping capability. “The JXL Conversion is longer than a standard Wrangler (15 inches, in fact), with the additional stretch used to house the vehicle's pop-up camper top that conceals not just a split-level sleeping area but also a dining table and small kitchen area to complement your cook stove,” MotorTrend notes.
Drivers will also enjoy 50% more cargo space, which can also come in handy when using the off-road van in your everyday life in the city.
We love the Sportsmobile Classic 4x4 based on Ford’s full-size E-Series van. The adventure van “takes a Ford Cutaway body and molds it with a steel reinforced fiberglass shell. The integrated penthouse top drops flush into the shell for a streamline look,” according to Sportsmobile.
The body-on-frame design can handle rough terrain while still providing exceptional on-road comfort. Priced almost as much as a condo, pricing can range from $175,000 to $225,000. The unstoppable RV is powered by either a V8 or V10 engine.

Globe-trotters for off the beaten path

The EarthRoamer XV-HD sports a turbo diesel V-8 engine and a Ford F-750 chassis. But we’re not gonna lie, with a $2 million price tag, it's likely you’ll be the only outdoorsmen making their way through the wilderness and tough terrain. The exclusive off-road van offers five different floor plans, which of course can be customized to your liking.
The Global Expedition Vehicles Safari Extreme 4X4 RV is a medium-duty camper that may just be as big as your apartment. Drivers can live their best Safari life while feeling safe and protected by its strong body.
According to MotorTrend, the muscle-powered vehicle “deploys a ‘kinetic mounting system’ that allows the chassis to flex while keeping the camper body rigid, which means you won't blow out windows or dump plates on the floor while tackling moguls or inclines.”
With the option of a steam oven or granite countertops, we’re starting to think this RV is way more luxurious than an apartment. We’ll be moving in on the first of the month.
The Outside Van is the ultimate customization experience. There are no specific floor plans, models, or configurations to stick to. Instead, the company connects buyers with its craftspeople to create their dream camper.
Using the four-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, Outside Van offers a hands-on approach for buyers that continues throughout the entire process. “Whether you're looking for a winch-wearing, Fox-shocks-equipped dune basher or an elegant, woodwork-laden escape parlor, Outside Van has a reputation for delivering in the van camping community.”
