The new
Mazda
MX-5 Miata might have it all: a six-speed manual transmission, a drop-top roof, solid handling, and class-leading steering. It’s one of the most affordable models in its class, with an MSRP ranging from $27,300 to $38,200. If you’re searching for a highly-rated, reliable roadster at an attractive price point, look no further than the MX-5 Miata.
Whether you’re an amateur racer or just looking to turn up the fun on your weekend trips, the MX-5 offers the rare experience of a truly fun, intimate drive that doesn't break the bank.

European style meets Japanese engineering

First debuting in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, the MX-5 Miata has always stood out in its segment for its light, simplified design, and dynamic engineering. It quickly became the benchmark for a new generation of small roadsters—continuing the design legacy of then-discontinued cars such as the Fiat Spider or Triumph Spitfire.
Not only that, but this MX-5 also stood out for its reliability and affordability. It even earned itself the title of the best-selling two-seat sports car in history from the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000.
For such a highly-rated and beloved car, it’s hard to imagine that Mazda could make any improvements, but the latest edition has been highly praised in
Consumer Reports
for its ratings and specs.

A new edition of a timeless car

The new 2022 MX-5 still comes with a hint of nostalgia, as the six-speed manual transmission is standard. You can upgrade to an automatic, but lovers of the MX-5 insist that it's best driven with a manual transmission.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine packs a punch in this wispy ride, which only clocks in at 2,300 pounds. The spritely Miata only takes 6.7 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph and consumes a sensible 34 mpg on average with premium fuel.
The horsepower also got an upgrade from 2019’s 155 to an impressive 181. Other changes from previous models include suspension updates, and enhanced safety features including blind spot warnings, low-speed automatic emergency braking, and cross-traffic and lane-departure warnings.
The few potential downsides to the MX-5 come down to comfort. If things like small cabin space or a jittery, noisy ride are dealbreakers, then you’ll likely have to look towards more upscale sports cars.
