Very few people would probably turn down a free
Chevy
Corvette if it was offered to them. After all, it's considered to be one of the most classic cars of all time from this automaker. Its performance has been proven to match many foreign sports cars, yet you'll probably only pay half the price.
One of the greatest things about the Corvette is that its performance never seems to dwindle with age. Though not exactly cheap nowadays,
Kelley Blue Book
says the 2016 Chevy Corvette is still a great buy.

Examining the specs of the 2016 Corvette

This is the third model year of the C7 generation, fresh with new carbon fiber components and square taillights. This was also the first Corvette to have "Stingray" in its name since the late 1970s.
All trims come standard with a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a seven-speed manual transmission and RWD.
KBB says the Corvette's handling is the best in its class, and it needs less than four seconds to hit 60 mph. It still gets great mileage despite its performance, averaging 29 mpg on the highway.
As usual, the available Z51 package adds several essential racing enhancements. The 2016 Chevy Corvette Z06 comes with a supercharged version of the standard V8, capable of 650 horsepower. This model is set to make a comeback for the
2023 model year.

Is it better than the C8 Corvette?

MORE: The 2020 Corvette, Is It Still the Best Corvette?
The 2016 Corvette might be very modern, but it still has a different engine layout compared to the C8. Mid-engine cars like the C8 can change direction faster because their mass is more centralized. With more weight on the rear brakes, the C8 Corvette also has better stopping power.
The latest Corvette's V8 has also been updated to make 490 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The optional performance package adds five extra ponies and a 0-60 acceleration time under three seconds.
Both the C8 and the C7 Corvettes come with aggressive styling reminiscent of any foreign hypercar. One possible drawback is that the latest Corvette can't be had with a manual transmission. You can only get an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, previously just optional on the C7.

The 2016 Corvette might be an unbeatable bargain

When it was first released, the 2016 Corvette coupe was the cheapest version at $56,500. Convertible models started at $60,500.
The Z51 package was an extra $5,000 for both body styles. The 2016 Chevy Corvette Z06 was around $80,000 at launch.
If you're after the Z51 Corvette, these models have gone down in price significantly. According to
Carfax
, a Z51 coupe with nearly 72,000 miles can be had for $42,750. A 2016 Z06 Coupe with 50,000 miles might only be around $63,000.
Some listings for the base LT1 models with around 50,000 miles are as low as $45,000. The Corvette doesn't typically depreciate as fast as other cars, but that's just a testament to its iconic status.

Is auto insurance cheaper for the 2016 Corvette?

The good news is that Corvettes generally have cheaper policies in general compared to the average vehicle. Still, the cost of an insurance plan depends on more than the make and trim of the vehicle. You'll also have to consider your age, driving record, state of residence, and how much protection you'll need.
