Toyota
has always been a critical favorite, and it has proven its worth yet again. Last year, Toyota finally surpassed GM as
the best-selling automaker
in the United States. According to
Consumer Reports
, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime is the best car to buy within a $35,000-$45,000 budget.
Last year,
Consumer Reports
gave that spot to the 2021 Subaru Outback. Here's why CR loved the Toyota RAV4 Prime so much, even with all the Subaru Outback's great features.

The Toyota RAV4 Prime is great all around

The RAV4 Prime offers more power than any other compact SUV on the market with 302 horsepower paired and standard AWD. When tested by CR, it reached 60 mph in a quick 6.3 seconds.
It's not the sportiest Toyota car, but testers say that the RAV4 Prime's acceleration comes pretty much effortlessly. The CVT shifts smoothly enough, though it definitely has the standard CVT buzziness.
The Toyota RAV4 Prime definitely excels more in terms of ride quality. The suspension absorbs every hard bump in its path, and there's little body roll to speak of.
As a plug-in hybrid, the Toyota RAV4 Prime is also very efficient. It has 42 miles of electric range and can earn 34 mpg combined city/highway in gas-only mode.
The interior is roomy and has comfortable synthetic leather seats. CR testers found themselves wishing for extra lumbar support, but seat access is easy for both rows. The infotainment system is user-friendly with a good mix of both digital and physical controls.

The Subaru Outback still shines

Even if it didn't keep its top spot this year, the 2022 Subaru Outback still has high owner satisfaction scores. The Subaru Outback actually has two powertrain options, but the most powerful one only has 260 horsepower. Even with the upgraded turbo-four engine it was still a full second slower on CR's acceleration test.
Testers still found the Subaru Outback to have great handling and exceptional off-road performance. The X-Mode AWD system offers SUV drivers some extra utility with drive modes for deep mud and snow.
The available Wilderness edition offers several new features for adventurers. A new roof rack and extra storage compartments are included, as well as more X-Mode features.
CR even said that the Subaru Outback has better braking performance than the Toyota RAV4 Prime. The seats are also slightly roomier and have better lumbar support. However, the infotainment system suffers from lagging response times and confusing controls.

Why the Toyota RAV4 Prime probably won critical favor

The Subaru Outback's mileage is a decent at 28 mpg combined city/highway, but clearly the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV is more efficient.
The RAV4 Prime is also faster, especially compared to the Outback's meager base engine. The infotainment system inside Toyota cars might be plain, but it's still easier to operate compared to the Subaru Outback's.
The Toyota RAV4 Prime has a perfect reliability rating, whereas the Subaru Outback's dependability is only average. While both of them are still good SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 Prime definitely has the edge.

Is Toyota RAV4 Prime auto insurance more affordable?

According to our research, the average driver pays
$2,270 per year
on RAV4 Prime insurance policies. That's almost $400 less than a lot of other Toyota cars, but it's admittedly still a little higher than average. However, since hybrids typically have higher insurance rates than gas-powered cars, their higher cost is not unusual.
