The Toyota Tundra Limited, Limit Your Expectations

The Toyota Tundra has its loyal fans who love it for its reliability, but many others are not always impressed. Sadly, despite the Tundra’s new look, it seems as though the Tundra Limited might not shine as brightly as other trucks in its segment.

background
Toyota has managed to amass a staunch following throughout the years—shoppers who've stuck with the Japanese automaker's
trucks
for the reliability and robustness of the products. The Toyota Tundra has been in the market for over 14 years. Still, the relatively smaller fanbase stays true to the model, despite waiting for redesigns for what seems like a lifetime.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited comes with new modifications. Its new hybrid powertrain, larger touchscreen, and rear air springs are enough to send ripples among the brand's followers. Still, the hybrid truck barely stands up to its competition—something the model's loyal fans don't mind at all, so long as its reliability means

Why should you limit your expectations of the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited?

While the upgrades are a cause for celebration, it's still challenging to sell the model as you move lower the trim levels. The AWD Tundra Limited crew cab weighs 251 pounds less than the flagship TRD Pro hybrid. Even with its available 437 hp hybrid powertrain, the truck takes 6.1 seconds to reach 60 mph—that's 0.4 seconds more than the TRD Pro.
Another shortcoming of the Tundra is the ride quality.
Car and Driver
highlighted that the truck's body wallows, especially when cornering, indicating that it's slightly underdamped, not to mention the mild shakiness that the solid rear axle sends through the frame. For many truck lovers, the chunkiness of its controls would be a dealbreaker, but that's not a bother to Toyota buffs.
Further, the Tundra Limited's interior isn't as cavernous as one would expect from a half-ton truck, especially in the back. It has a narrower rear-seat space, and its 46.1 inches of legroom would make some wiggle and flex their feet, as it is about an inch less space than previous models. However, the truck still has well-thought-out ergonomics and a no-fluff design.

How the 2022 Toyota Tundra compares to other trucks in its class

A lightweight truck means better fuel economy and acceleration. Even with its decent acceleration, the 2022 Tundra Limited weighs 5,856 lbs., which is several hundred pounds lighter than other rivals from RAM, Ford, and General Motors. In fact, the RAM 1500 crew cab zooms from 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds—nearly the same time as the Tundra—while other GM and Ford variants do that in less than five seconds.
The Tundra's limited interior space and slightly rough cornering confirm to any owner that they are driving a pickup. That's contrary to the RAM 1500, which boasts a more quality ride, thanks to its refined exterior and interior design that gives it a quieter, smoother driving experience. It's still amazing how Toyota made the Tundra seem smaller for a half-ton truck.

Specs, design, and features of the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited

On the dash of the Tundra, you'll find analog gauges flanking a 4.2-inch display, an eye-catching 12.3-inch digital cluster—a standard feature on higher trims—and a user-friendly and massive 14-inch infotainment touchscreen with comically large fonts and display icon. Some owners may also find the lack of a dedicated tuning knob annoying.
Priced at $60,188, the 2022 Tundra Limited elicits mixed consumer reactions. Some love the approach Toyota took with the interior design and the smoothness and power that the twin-turbo V6 delivers. Others say that the turbo wastegate is a reliability issue, and the hood is 10 inches longer than the 2021 model with no benefits.
