No one enjoys having a recall on their vehicle, but over 450,000 Toyota and
Lexus
models have been listed as having a
software malfunction
. This wave of vehicle recalls is the most recent since 2021 for Toyota (who also owns Lexus). While drivers may not understand what exactly is wrong with their vehicle, it’s important to stay up-to-date on safety recalls—just like it’s important to make sure your
car insurance policy
is right for you.

Toyota’s stability control glitch

As
Cars.com
points out, there are 458,000 vehicles that are affected by this most recent software glitch, which seems to affect some aspect of each vehicle’s stability control features.
It also doesn’t help that many of the vehicles affected are some of the Japanese manufacturer’s most popular vehicles, including the 2020-22 Highlander Hybrid, 2021-22 Mirai fuel-cell sedans, and RAV4 Prime, among others. Some of the more popular Lexus models that are affected include the 2021-22 LS 500h sedans, the 2022 LX 600, NX 350h, and others.
These vehicles have a skid control electronic control unit software, an on-board computer feature that helps drivers correct their steering if they encounter slick road conditions. However, due to the software glitch, these vehicles may not turn on the vehicle stability control system when the vehicle is restarted, which can increase the risk of a car accident while the vehicle is in motion.

Will Toyota or Lexus owners have to pay to fix the recall?

Thankfully not—licensed Toyota or Lexus dealers will fix the software malfunction for free, which likely wouldn’t take more than a few hours to repair. As with many vehicle recalls, owners whose cars are included on the list will receive a notification in the mail by June of 2022, and probably by email, too. To talk with a representative, owners can also call Toyota at 800-331-4331, or Lexus at 800-255-3987.
Additionally, the
NHTSA
website allows owners to search for their vehicle’s
identification number
and learn more about the repairs that their car, truck, or SUV might need. It’s always a good idea to visit the NHTSA’s website in order to get more information about vehicle recalls and to learn more about whether or not your vehicle’s needed repairs will be covered by the vehicle’s manufacturer.
