Toyota Is Finally Giving the 2022 Supra What It Deserves

In a surprising move, Toyota has finally caved in and done what fans have been begging for—the 2022 Supra is getting a 6-speed manual transmission. To hell with practicality; this stick-shift throws caution to the wind.

Stick-shift fans rejoice; the 2022 Toyota Supra is (finally) getting a manual transmission. That’s right—
Toyota
is adding a third pedal to the floorboard of its beloved rear-wheel-drive sports car.
It’s a production decision that’s somewhat surprising, considering that many carmakers are shifting permanently to electronically-shifted automatic transmissions. Whether the manual option will stick is up to fate and Toyota’s executives, but in the meanwhile, stick-shift fans should take a hard look at the 6-speed offered in the 2022 Supra.

Why is the 2022 Supra getting a manual transmission?

First, to clear things up—the manual option in the 2022 Supra isn’t a practical choice or motivated by performance-related factors. It’s because, as
Kelley Blue Book
indicated, Supra fans have been pestering Toyota for it. While the carmaker continually pointed out that die-hard manual drivers could opt for the 2022 GR 86 if they really wanted a stick shift, this didn’t satiate the masses.
Toyota finally caved, and now the 2022 Supra gets what loyalists have been craving. With what
CNET
reports is a turbo-charged 3.0-liter inline-six BMW engine, the 2022 Supra is taking things old school in a good way. As a rear-wheel drive, moderately priced, powerful sports car, the Supra’s manual 6-speed option hails back to the days that many car enthusiasts refer to as the golden age of cars.
Will the good times last? It’s hard to know, but for now, Toyota has put the manual transmission option back on the table.

As with most rear-wheel-drive sports cars, practicality isn’t really the motivating factor in buying the 2022 Supra. Instead, drivers will be exchanging fuel economy and all-wheel drive options for an engine with 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
The 2022 Supra starts at $43,290, which is expensive when compared to the Dodge Challenger which starts at $30,075, the Ford Mustang starting at $27,205, and the Chevy Camaro which begins at $25,000.
Still, Toyota fans love the exotic looks and BMW-powered engine of the 2022 Supra, and for those who’ve been holding out for a stick-shift option in their favorite imported sports car, there’s never been a better time to go all in. Toyota isn’t slowing its roll this year with other models, either—a performance-geared GR Corolla hatchback and a redesigned Sequoia and Tundra are in the works, as well.
