Not all change is good. It’s pretty hard to deny that Toyota’s first EV (not counting the Prius) has been a flop—the bZ4X can barely keep its wheels on, after all. But Toyota isn’t giving up hope, and neither are we. In fact, Toyota is planning some exciting new changes to its lineup. Though we’re desperate for new details on what the Japanese automaker is planning, some specifics have been released.

Toyota vehicles that will be affected by the multi-year redesign project

Toyota has long been one of the most valued and trusted names in the automotive industry—an industry that is rapidly changing. But for a global brand like Toyota, there are quite a few moving parts. Toyota’s plans for the Tacoma and Tundra lie in electrification, but 15 other models are up for redesign, well. These other vehicles, as reported by
Infotatile
, are listed below:
  • 4Runner
  • Grand Highlander
  • Highlander
  • Venza
  • RAV-4
  • C-HR
  • Corolla Cross
  • Sienna
  • Crown
  • Camry
  • Corolla
  • Prius/Prius Prime
  • GR Supra
  • GR 86
  • GR Corolla
Though powertrain options and specs aren’t currently available, there are details available about the huge undertaking currently underway at Toyota.

Toyota’s redesign plans for its SUVs

The
4Runner
has been a 4WD staple for decades, and is due for a redesign that’s focused on adjusting its body-on-frame platform. This is expected to occur in 2024, as the 4Runner will be the last of the Toyota SUVs to be refreshed. Hopefully, a fully-electric powertrain will be available, but it’s more likely that a hybrid powertrain will help max out power and torque for the Toyota 4Runner.
For 2023, Toyota will debut a larger, three-row crossover that’s been titled theGrand Highlander. This crossover will be a little bigger than the traditional Highlander and will be manufactured at the same plant in Princeton, Indiana. The Grand Highlander is intended to offer more driver luxuries than the Highlander, but the Toyota
Highlander
isn’t getting left out.
The Highlander will receive a new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and other powertrain upgrades in a reengineering effort over the latter half of 2022. The RAV4 will also get a redesign within the first 2 quarters of 2023, with expected styling updates and new safety and infotainment upgrades to accompany its facelift.

Toyota’s redesign plans for cars, crossovers, and vans

Few details are known about Toyota’s plans for the Venza, but it is expected to get a redesign in 2024. Unfortunately for the Toyota C-HR, this subcompact crossover is expected to be discontinued in favor of the more-contemporary Corolla Cross, a hybrid all-wheel-drive subcompact crossover that got an extra 25 hp over the previous year.
The Corolla Cross will be due for a redesign in 2026, and Toyota Sienna, the brand’s only minivan, was redesigned in 2020, so it’ll be due for another redesign in 2025. An unfamiliar contender that’s coming to American dealerships soon is the ToyotaCrown, which will arrive in the U.S. at the end of 2022. If the model sells well in America (having been imported from Japan), we’re likely to see a diverse set of trim levels and a redesign within the next several years.
Toyota will redesign the Prius hybrid and Prius Prime plug-in hybrid in 2023. Expect drastically altered styling and a host of all-new safety, driver-assistance, and infotainment upgrades to entice EV fans.

Toyota’s redesign plans for GR models

Toyota is adding an optional six-speed manual transmission to the
2023 GR Supra
coupe this year. Otherwise, its next update isn’t expected until 2026. The GR 86, which was made in conjunction with Toyota and its occasional engineering and business partner, Subaru, was redesigned in 2021, but is expected to be partially redesigned again in 2026.
The GR Corolla has already been redesigned, now with an aggressive 300-hp, 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine, plus a coveted six-speed manual transmission.
Our favorite features of the GR Corolla? It has triple exhaust and all-new technology that allows the driver to fine-tune front/rear power distribution biases (60/40, 50/50, or 70/30), suiting whatever the open road throws at it.
