The thought of owning
a Lamborghini
is enough to shutter your wallet. Now imagine owning a supercar carved out of gold or plated with precious metals. It sounds like it shouldn’t exist.
But it does, and the
European
giant has flirted with such cars in the past. So, here’s a brief inquiry into golden Lambos, and why they exist.

From ideas to the gold Lamborghini: a glittering story of golden cars

The story of gold and cars began in 1979 when American Express wanted to use something special to advertise their gold credit cards. So, the company partnered with DeLorean Motor Company to make 100 24-carat gold plated cars to market the product. Their cars were already expensive, but Lamborghini, the ultimate symbol of the rich, wanted to invest in this new market.
For Lamborghini, making a gold car was a continuation of their brand. From the iconic golden bull logo to a car curved from an 1100-pound block of gold, everything about Lambo has golden suggestions to it.
And they made good on that tradition, thanks to the work of German engineer Robert Gulpen.
Gulpen, like most prolific designers out there, started by simply curving out cars from various materials. As his passion blossomed in the 1990s, he turned to expensive and stand-alone pieces that sold for over $20,000. At the peak of his career, he landed at Bugatti, where he is credited for Veyron models.
One of his initial Lamborghini works was an Aventador golden prototype which was eight times smaller than the actual car. Its price was at par with the real thing too. It was auctioned at the Frankfurt Auto Show during the initial unveiling at $350,000.
And Lamborghini built on his mini model, releasing the Aventador LP-700-4, a model that jumped into the Guinness World Records for being the most expensive. According to
CNBC
, the golden vehicle is currently in Dubai and valued at around $7.5 million.

Though it is missing most of the motoring elements that car fanatics love, its rarity, meticulous designs, and craftsmanship are worthy of review. A fully-sized Aventador is a beast with a V12 engine churning out 700hp and can reach a top speed of 217 mph. Meanwhile, the outside is marked by the signature Lambo silhouette.
The entire body is constructed from carbon fiber and 0.001 mm thick solid gold threads. The rims and interior are cast from pure gold and platinum, only adding to the exclusive shine. Oh, it’s also bulletproof.
And it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get your hands on one, as Lambo made only one model.
