The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is only available as a hybrid

The tides of automotive power are turning: for the first time ever, Toyota’s full-size SUV is only available with a hybrid powertrain. The twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain is borrowed from the Tundra, but it’s only available as an option on the Sequoia’s truck sibling. In the mighty new ute, that pairing of engine and motor generates 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque on all five of the Sequoia’s trim levels.

Toyota hasn’t yet released EPA estimates for the new Sequoia’s fuel economy, but it’s safe to expect that the hybrid powertrain will translate to mileage wins. For context, the 2022 Tundra’s hybrid setup is good for a combined fuel economy of 22 mpg—encouraging next to the gas-only Sequoia’s dismal 15 mpg combined.

What’s new for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia?

It would be easier to list what isn’t new. From improved driving manners and optimized architecture to updated styling, the 2023 Sequoia is a new beast, inside and out.

Let’s look at some of the standouts: a new rack-mounted electronic power steering system, a range of seating and cargo options, and an

upgraded towing capacity

of up to 9,500 lbs. The roomy third-row now offers a reclining back seat as well as the ability to slide back and flip down into a shelf system. However, that all-important third row won’t fold perfectly flat, cutting into the Sequoia’s overall cargo volume, which remains a weak point of the model.

For the first time, the Sequoia’s also introduced driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. By selecting a mode, you’ll optimize your vehicle’s performance for whatever priority you have in mind—speed and power in Sport mode, or fuel conservation in Eco mode.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be available in five distinct trim levels:

SR5: “Base” doesn’t mean “sparse” with the new Sequoia. The starting version of the Sequoia is well-outfitted and offers plenty of optional upgrades.

Limited: For a modest price bump, the second-tier grade ramps up convenience and comfort with heated seats, a hands-free power liftgate, and more.

Platinum: Luxury is the name of the game for the Platinum trim, which features high-grade LED headlights, a 14-speaker JBL® sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs.

TRD Pro: This is the Sequoia for adventurers, with standard all-wheel drive (available as an option on other trims) for

off-road driving

and a sturdy Tow Tech Package for that trailer or sailboat.

Capstone: The best of the best, this top-of-the-line trim goes all-out with ultra-luxe finishes like open-pore American walnut accents and acoustic glass for a shockingly quiet ride.
