compiled a list of the thirstiest cars based on gas tank size, current gas prices, and the tank's range. While our three picks are still satisfying vehicles, you can expect to pay over $100 to fill up each one!
The Ford Expedition uses the most gas
With a tank capacity of over 28 gallons, it takes $120 to fill up a Ford Expedition. CR says that this SUV's overall gas mileage is 16 mpg, though it does decently on the highway with 23 mpg.
Despite its poor fuel economy, the Expedition is actually one of CR's favorite large SUVs. Its twin-turbo V6 can generate up to 400 horsepower, giving it better acceleration than many of its rivals. It has a stiff ride quality, but the interior is quiet and constructed with upscale materials.
The long-wheelbase version, the Ford Expedition Max, features a cavernous third row. Even with all the seats in use, drivers can utilize up to 36 cubic feet of cargo space. As you can probably imagine, parking this beast can be quite a challenge.
What do gas prices look like for a Nissan Titan?

If you want to get the Nissan Titan's full range of 416 miles, you'll pay $111 at the pump. It has a 400-horsepower V8 with nearly identical fuel economy numbers compared to the Ford Expedition. It's also one of the quickest trucks in the segment, hitting 60 mph in only 6.7 seconds.
Still, your Nissan Titan's fuel economy might be worse depending on how much you're towing. With RWD and the upgraded Tow package, the Titan can pull 9,310 pounds. That's a loss of 80 pounds compared to outgoing models, but maximum payload capacity has been upped to 1,711 pounds.
Overall, CR gave the Nissan Titan a favorable review because of its easy handling and roomy interior. It still has a lower score overall because of subpar depreciation, reliability concerns, and some annoying infotainment controls.
The Cadillac Escalade is surprisingly cheaper at the pump
Despite its high asking price, it only takes $102 to fill up this massive SUV with the standard 420-horsepower V8. That gets 384 miles in your tank, with a combined 16 mpg city/highway.
The Cadillac Escalade also has a more efficient option, a turbo-diesel with 277 horsepower on tap. This engine, combined with RWD, brings the Escalade's mileage up to 23 mpg combined city/highway.
In addition to gas savings, Escalade drivers can enjoy a smooth and quiet ride wrapped inside a luxurious leather interior. CR says some drivers might be overwhelmed by all the tech features, but most of these gizmos are simple to use.
Handling this hulking SUV is difficult, but at least there's no exaggerated body roll.
