At the 2022's Tokyo Auto Salon, Subaru unveiled the STI E-RA, a powerful electric race car capable of delivering up to 1073 horsepower. It is unclear whether
Subaru
engineers were targeting 1100 hp in this four-motor beast or gunning for a record on track—but they’ve certainly created something capable of doing so.
Here’s a look into the E-RA, and what it might accomplish.

The Subaru STI E-RA concept

The E-RA (Electric Record Attempt) is a futuristic car designed to usher in a carbon-free era on racing tracks. But it’s more than just a pacesetter; Subaru also designed it to foray into the world of EVs—one they have been slow to get into—according to

In the coming days, this impressive feat of engineering will be tested on various Japanese circuits in preparation for the famed Nürburgring in 2023, where the Japanese carmaker has set an ambitious goal of 6 minutes and 40 seconds—some 50 seconds quicker than the Tesla Plaid Model S.
And it certainly has the spec to do so. The car comes with 4 Yamaha electric motors connected to each wheel, working together to produce 1073 hp. The racer also takes advantage of a clever four-wheel torque vectoring system.
All of that is kept in check by a 60 Kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery cooling system, which ensures the car reaches high speeds securely.

The Japanese brand also unveiled the Solterra—a road legal, but perhaps equally important car. It is the first AWD electric SUV, and it’s packed with next-gen features.
The spacious interior has 126 cubic feet of passenger space with generous legroom, StarTex-trimmed upholstery, and soft-touch materials for comfortability and convenience.
State-of-the-art safety features and a 12.3-inch massive touch screen are also available. And while its off-road capabilities could be called into question, 8.3 inches of ground clearance make it a viable option off the asphalt.
The introduction of Solterra and E-RA echoes Subaru's seriousness in capitalizing on the electric cars market. Recently, carmakers have tried to prove that EVs are high-performance racers in addition to everyday gasoline cars. And with their most recent efforts, they might have done just that.

Is the new Subaru STI E-RA worth it?

Well, the model won’t be road legal—at least not immediately. And it is admittedly difficult to see why such a powerful, track-focused EV might be necessary.
Still, electrification has started to permeate all parts of the automotive industry, in no small part due to Tesla’s influence. Perhaps a competitive race car might be good for the industry. Regardless, it’ll be fun to see just how quick the new model can go.
