Following the 70th Anniversary Edition launched last year, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is now offered as a sleek Matte Black Edition in Japan. While the new version doesn’t offer much-needed performance upgrades, it does take the SUV’s style to the next level.
Last year the larger Land Cruiser entered a new generation, with the all-new Land Cruiser LC300. The model received new underpinnings with Toyota’s TNGA platform.
To align the vehicle with the rest of the SUV segment, it received a redesigned interior and a massive styling overhaul.

Buyers can purchase the Land Cruiser Prado in either black or white. Matte black trim pieces are added all around, which include the fog light bezels, tailgate accents, mirror caps, roof rails, headlight garnish, and the grille and grille insert.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Black Matte Edition’s mirrors fold in electronically, and the LED headlights are equipped with an auto-leveling function. Toyota also incorporated six-spoke 18-inch matte black aluminum wheels in 265/60R18 tires.
The interior features wood accents on the dash, black leather upholstery, a six-speaker audio system, and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation and TV. Shoppers can choose between a two-row, five-seater configuration, or opt for a three-row, seven-seater variant.
Adaptive cruise control is included in the Toyota Safety Sense suite, and drivers can opt for the rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.
The EU-spec Land Crusier 150 Series only offers a diesel option, but Japanese buyers can choose between petrol and diesel engines.
The Prado’s powertrain remains unchanged, sporting a 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 hp and 368.8lb-ft of torque or a 2.7-liter gasoline engine with 163 hp and 181lb-ft of torque. The six-speed automatic gearbox sends power to all four wheels.
In today’s exchange rate, the Toyota Land Cruiser Black Matte Edition ranges from ¥4.3 to ¥5.1 million ($32,662 to $38,739). But if you’re an American looking to buy one, you’ll have to move out of the U.S.
Unfortunately, Toyota hasn’t been able to sell much more than 3,000 units of the car in the U.S. or Canada.
