Subaru
is saying goodbye to the WRX STI in its current form. But that doesn't mean that the vehicle is going to disappear forever. It may be back soon enough, only with some different, more eco-friendly technology in place.
Curious to learn more about what's ahead for the STI?
Jerry
has all the details.

Why is Subaru discontinuing the Subaru WRX STI?

Like many other car manufacturers these days, Subaru is looking to the future, and what it sees is that EVs are where the automotive world is headed. As a result,
The Verge
reports, the Japanese car company will no longer be producing the gas-powered WRX STI.
In explaining its discontinuation of the combustion engine version of the STI, Subaru explained that "regulations and requirements for greenhouse gasses (GHG), zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV), and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ)"  were behind the decision to halt production on the car.
This decision has left some wondering, what's next for the WRX STI?

A look at Subaru's plans for the future

Certainly, any fans of the Subaru sports car out there still have a reason for optimism. The car may not disappear altogether but could rather emerge in a new form.
In its press release,
Subaru
hinted at such an outcome when it said that "Subaru Corporation is exploring opportunities for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification."
Some sports car fans might wonder whether an electric version of the car could possibly live up to the performance of the original. Given the other sports and supercar manufacturers that have recently
released electric versions
of their vehicles, it definitely seems possible that it could.
But what sort of performance would the electric version of the STI have to live up to exactly?

Here are the specs on the Subaru WRX STI

The Subaru WRX STI is one of the fastest Subaru sedans on the market, which means any electric version that the company develops will have a high bar to meet or surpass when it comes to speed.
The speedy sedan comes with a 2.5 L, 305 hp engine that generates 290 lb-ft of torque. Its 6-speed manual transmission is typical of what you'd find in a sports car as well.
At a starting price of $38,170, the car is more affordable than many other vehicles of its type on the market, although it's pricier than the simpler,
recently redesigned WRX
.
Car and Driver
describes the car's interior as pretty dark, but it does come with some modern features, including a 5.9-inch color information screen and a 7.0-inch touchscreen that supports Subaru's Starlink infotainment system.
Fuel economy on the STI isn't awesome, clocking in as it does at 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
Nevertheless, it certainly beats many of the SUVs and trucks guzzling up fuel on the roads these days. And if the electric version of the vehicle does eventually get produced, concerns about fuel consumption will be a thing of the past.
