Rumors of a Ford Thunderbird Gain Traction

While many aspects of the automotive industry are speeding towards the future, could
Ford
be tapping into nostalgia with a revival of the Thunderbird? The iconic two-seat convertible has co-starred everywhere from Thelma and Louise to Wild at Heart, but hasn’t been in production since 2005.
The first two-seat Thunderbird was launched in 1955 to rival the Corvette but eventually became its own beast. The Thunderbird transformed across many iterations, from the original two-seater to a four-door sedan and later a turbo coupe. The last revival from 2002 to 2005 saw it as a retro couple paying homage to its mid-century origins.
Ford filed a trademark for the Thunderbird name on Jan 12, 2021, and the industry has been buzzing about it ever since. At this point, it’s all hearsay, but that hasn’t stopped people from buzzing about it. The most recent rumor of a Thunderbird revival comes from the website Ford Authority, but attributes the claim to “anonymous insiders.”

Would a Ford Thunderbird be a new classic?

It’s not unusual for a brand to bring back old nameplates or register an old name, but the idea of the Thunderbird returning in a two-door state close to its original form is intriguing to enthusiasts. The early 2000s revival was markedly unsuccessful, but it’s possible that Ford just missed the mark.
Rumor has it that the new Thunderbird would take a different direction from a grand touring coupe, making it an unofficial rival of the C8 Chevrolet Corvette. It seems that Ford is on a winning streak when it comes to cashing in on revivals, as the recently resurrected Bronco has proven.
Even if the Thunderbird’s design and namesake are a tribute to the past, it’s likely that a revived Thunderbird would be electrified in some way.
The brand has seen huge success with the electrified F-150 Lightning
and the
Mustang Mach-E
, proving to many naysayers that electric powertrains can pack just as much of a punch as gas or diesel.
