background
A family getting out of a Rivian R1S electric SUV.
Where to start with the absolute beauty of an interior in the Rivian R1 SUV. It’s as if a (vegan leather) Eames chair was dropped into a high-tech rugged SUV. It’s functional, luxurious but approachable, and built with the adventure-seeker in mind.
The fleet of Rivian’s are just beginning to go through the production line with delivery expected for later in 2022. But the early reviews make it seem like this
electric vehicle
company might just become one of the next staples of the evolving USA auto brands.

Rivian R1S interior overview

According to the
company’s website
, the Rivian R1S SUV currently comes in two different finishes; Adventure and Explore. While they’re similar on a whole, there are a few minor differences to note.

The R1S Adventure

The Adventure model of the Rivian R1has a front surround made of whole-grain wood that is built to look like a solid piece of furniture. The way that it wraps around the large, user-friendly front display gives the entire dash an old meets new feel. It’s a fusion that works.
Rivian has partnered with Meridian to create an immersive audio experience that even includes a removable Bluetooth speaker. That’s one less thing on the checklist when packing for that next camping adventure! The front console also acts as a wireless charging base for your phone. No more pesky charging cables
The interior is available in three thoughtful trims:  Black Mountain, Forest Edge, and Ocean Coast and has a starting price of around $75,000

The R1S Explore

The athletic-looking Explore model of the Rivian R1 has a matte black finish throughout and comfortable vegan leather chairs. The trim is slightly less luxurious than the Adventure, but it still contains a highly tuned audio experience as well as the panoramic glass roof (also standard on the Adventure).
Both the Explore and Adventure models come with a high-resolution touch screen that is the operational hub for the rest of the car. The eight different driving modes? The varying heights for the suspension? All done through the touch screen.
The interior is available in Black Mountain and Ocean Coast and has a starting price of around $70,000
Both versions of the Rivian R1S boasts an impressive 316-mile range on a full charge and a 0-60 time of three seconds!

Minor criticism

MotorTrend also sang the praises of Rivian’s slick interior with two small pieces of constructive criticism for the new car company.
One, they thought only two cup holders in the front were not quite enough.
Two, while the high-resolution screen is incredible, they noted that a few more hard buttons would be welcomed. Specifically for the volume or temperature.
All in all, an awesome effort and execution for the first-ever Rivian R1S SUV.

Rivian R1S SUV next steps

While Rivian has had a small struggle keeping up with the immediate demand, the road forward looks endless and uncharted; exactly how they like it. Plans are already in the works for a more affordable Rivian R1 as well as other variations of the existing models.
