In the mid-’60s, the GT500 convertible got held up with production issues due to lack of fiberglass. The result? Only one was actually manufactured, and it was used as a company car for many years.

Years later, this rare Mustang was purchased by an avid car lover.

Shelby GT500 Super Snake

list of rarest Mustangs sits the 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake. In a similar story to the GT500 convertible, the Super Snake was supposed to be a limited run of around 50 cars, but in the end only one was ever created.

This car was unique for its racing engine, special rear axle, transmission, Thunderbolt tires, and flashy racing stripe. Adjusted for inflation, this car would’ve cost around $60,000 today. But, because only one exists, it was recently auctioned off for $1.3 million.

Mustang E

Jumping off the Shelby trend for a bit,

named the Ford Mustang E as one of the rarest Mustangs. Manufactured in 1969, there was nothing incredibly unique about the Mustang E. It was rumored to have been built specifically to compete in the Mobilgas Economy Run race/rally.

Sales were good and features were standard on this car. We guess it just never gained any real media traction.

Ford Aviation Series

These one-of-a-kind Mustangs are manufactured by Ford once per year to show off during an airshow. The car always centers around aviation, and is used for a charity showcase that raises money for the Young Eagles, a group that exposes young people to aviation.

Each year, you can find these rare Mustangs used for a good cause at the showcase. Plus, they’re almost always extremely high quality.

McLaren M81

This standard muscle car was around for the height of the era, during the ‘70s and ‘80s. This muscle car by McLaren was no different from many other muscle cars during the era. But, it was only used for racing purposes, making it a rare mustang produced by a brand that didn’t specialize in that type of car.

Shelby Green Hornet

Rounding out our list of rare mustangs is the 1968 Shelby Green Hornet. Like the other Shelby Mustangs, only one Green Hornet was ever produced, named for its deep forest green exterior. The Green Hornet supported a V8 engine that carried 450 hp, making it a powerful and fast car.

Eventually, the car was auctioned off for $1.8 million, but the sale fell through.
