Alright, let’s just rip the bandaid and get the hard part over with. GMC’s
newest car
, the EV Hummer, has a starting price of $112,595, placing it in the six-figure car club. Whether or not that club is to be scorned or revered is another question. But by most standards, that’s a large chunk of change for a car!
However, similar to the first generation gas-guzzling Humvee turned
Hummer
(civilian version of Humvee) of yesteryear, it begs the question if this thing can even be considered an “automobile”. Or is it something else altogether? Perhaps closer to a street-legal, and now fully electric, tank.
One this is for sure, It’s a monster. A pricey monster. So is it worth it?

The Hummer EV’s features

The new Hummer EV has all the rugged off-road gusto you associate with the brand but with sportscar elements intertwined. For instance, it goes from 0-60 MPH in three seconds! It’s able to do this by engaging the “Watts to Freedom” function that basically recalibrates the car,  making it more aerodynamic before launching you down the road.
The new Hummer EV also has this wild “crab walk”  function that allows all four wheels to turn 10 degrees in either direction and for the car to drive in that direction. Not only is it a hulk, but it’s also an agile hulk, like your favorite outside linebacker or power forward.
The first generation of Hummer EV comes with three motors packing 1,000 horsepower, 1100 lb-ft of real torque, and an incredible 350 miles to the charge. It also comes with a fully transparent and removable roof so you can take in all of that off-road glory.

But is the new Hummer EV worth it?

Did we mention that all of this cool stuff starts at $112,595? GMC has said that subsequent models will still pack a punch but at a more reasonable price. Like most things related to technology, if there’s some sticker shock initially, just give it a few years and the price will drop.
Other knocks on the new Hummer are that it’s very heavy coming in at 9,046 lbs. This weight makes it one of the heaviest passenger cars on the road. Another critique that an early review from
Kelley Blue Book
mentioned was that its features were SO abundant that a steep learning curve is necessary to figure them out. Maybe a Hummer EV for Dummies book is on the horizon?
That same review gave GMC a knock for not making the Hummer available with a gas engine option but that’s more of a subjective critique.
Whether or not you want to pony up that cash is between you and your bank account. If you have the money and you’re an off-road enthusiast, have at it.
