Although the Pontiac brand wasn’t around for very long, Pontiac vehicles made a big impact on the car world when they were on the market—in both good and bad ways. Not all Pontiac cars were even good, but some were truly great, including the Pontiac G8 GXP.
The iconic 2009 Pontiac vehicle was only available for two years, but buying a
used one
today makes a worthy addition to any car collector’s garage.

There aren’t very many Pontiac G8 GXPs available

The Pontiac G8 GXP isn’t necessarily easy to find. According to
Jalopnik
, the G8 GXP was only available for two years before the car brand’s demise, and less than 2,000 units of the model were ever sold.
So it can be difficult to find one for sale. It’s also important to keep in mind that finding parts for used G8 GXPs can be even more challenging, making for time-consuming and expensive repairs.

The Pontiac G8 GXP has an awesome engine

The 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP is so highly regarded, in large part, because of its incredible engine that was available for an incredible price.
The GXP trim of the Pontiac was equipped with an LS3 V8 engine that produced an astonishing 402 hp. For a sedan, that number was head-turning at the time. The engine could be paired with a Tremec six-speed manual transmission
The engine and power the G8 GXP produced was similar to that of the E60
BMW M5
and the C6 Corvette, but it was roughly half the price. When they were being produced, new G8 GXPs sold for about $40,000, although prices on used models today vary by seller.

The G8 GXP isn’t known for reliability

There’s no denying that the G8 GXP is iconic and would make a great addition to any car collection, but it has to be stated that this particular vehicle isn’t known for its reliability. According to
autoevolution
, drivers of the G8 GXP reported issues with the steering system and front suspension, likely caused by the large V8 engine mounted atop the front axle in a sedan design.
On top of that, there have been some bodywork issues reported as well. While it’s best practice to check all used cars for rust or erosion before purchasing, the G8 GXP seems to have some unique bodywork problems of its own. Drivers reported when driving at top speed, exterior trims like the front grille, rear spoiler, and hood scoops have flown off the car, which can be a danger to the driver and others on the road.
While these problems aren’t ideal, there are a variety of issues that come with all used cars, which is why it’s important to get a complete check of a used vehicle done by a professional before you purchase. With the proper maintenance, the Pontiac G8 GXP is an awesome and unique used sedan to have in your garage.
