Not To Be Forgotten: The '94 Toyota Supra

28 years since its original release, the Toyota Supra has almost tripled in price. But after closer inspection, it’s easy to see why buyers are willing to pay over $100,000.

background
Not all cars age well. But the 1994
Toyota
Supra might just have, looking just as good at 28 as it did when it was fresh off the showroom floor. It appears to be a relatively innocuous car, albeit a sporty one. But prices have soared, and the ‘94 coupe has become something of a recent classic—a status that has been cemented by its eye-watering price
So what does the 1994 Supra have going for it that makes it so valuable at a time when other cars of this age are headed for the junkyard?

The price is not right

The Toyota Supra certainly looks like it’s from the 90s, but buyers have found charm in the retro design.
When the 1994 Toyota Supra first came out, everyone wanted one—until they saw the relatively exclusive price tag of $40,000. And prices have only soared from there, with good-condition used Supras selling from $79,000 to $148,894.
Part of the reason for the exorbitant—and only growing—value, is the level of performance and driving experience. The base Supra comes equipped with a 24-valve in-line six-cylinder engine, which generates 220 hp.
For the right price and a little luck, you might be able to find a Supra with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter engine that generates 320 hp. Its 6.2-second 0-to-60 mph acceleration competes with some cars of similar spec out today.
Furthermore, the Supra is a rather pleasant daily drive. The handling feels natural, it's quiet, and it's hard to find a used vehicle that looks quite this sleek.

The reviews for the 1994 Toyota Supra were superb

The 1994 Toyota Supra earned some great reviews. Even though it's a small vehicle,
Cars.com
was very impressed with the fact that the interior doesn't feel tight. It's not quite as roomy as a much larger car, but it's always pleasant to sit in a sports car and not bash your elbows when entering and exiting.
The interior earned a lot of praise for being user-friendly and stylish. The leather seats are comfortable, and long car rides don't feel like torture two hours in.
Consumer Reports
is also full of praise. There are no complaints, and many of the owners reported that it's still a pleasure to drive despite its age and high mileage. Very few automobiles can make that claim.

How does the 1994 version compare to other Supras?

The 2022 GR Supra still has a lot in common with the 1994 version. The colors are still sharp and beautiful. It remains a coupe. The price still hovers around the $40,000 mark, which, shockingly, is still cheaper than the used model.
It comes equipped with a 2.0-liter twin-scroll single turbo inline 4-cylinder engine. There is also an optional 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. In terms of power, not much has changed in 28 years. And, crucially, the Supra continues to earn excellent reviews.
