Car technology
is advancing every day, as is the world of digital technology. Now the two are coming together to produce a new Alfa Romeo NFT, which will be offered alongside the new Tonale SUV. Could a boost from this venture help the brand's struggling sales? Let's see what people are saying.

What is the Alfa Romeo NFT?

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, have become all the rage lately, in industries from the arts to journalism to now, apparently, cars. NFTs are known for their uniqueness and are backed up with blockchain technology, allowing their owners to boast of having something that's truly one-of-a-kind and basically unhackable.
The Alfa Romeo NFT will be offered in conjunction with sales of the Tonale SUV,
CNBC
reports. The purpose of the NFT is to certify the vehicle when it's purchased and then to store data related to its use throughout its life.
The monitoring enabled by the NFT will allow for the production of a certificate to attest to the maintenance performed on the Tonale. This, in turn, will allow the owner to maintain the vehicle's resale value.

A look at the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is actually the first vehicle to be offered with its own NFT, making it stand out in a crowded SUV market. In the U.S., there will be two versions of the vehicle available. First, the standard Tonale will come with a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine offering 256 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
For the eco-conscious, there's an additional option: a
hybrid electric version much like BMW's
. This model will come with a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 272 hp, and offer an electric range of over 30 miles.

The Alfa Romeo NFT could give a boost to the company

The hope at Alfa Romeo is that some of the changes it has been implementing in its lineups recently could help generate enough excitement to turn sales around.
The company has sold fewer than 19,000 vehicles a year since 2019, which represents a significant decrease from its high of 23,800 cars in 2018. For comparison, its rival BMW sold 93,000 vehicles in just the final quarter of 2021 in the U.S.
One method Alfa Romeo plans to turn its sales around is through their declared intent to go
gas-free by 2027.
The Tonale NFT is another example of Alfa Romeo's attempt to increase sales by offering something new and unique for consumers.
As Francesco Calcara, head of the company's marketing and communication, put it at a recent press conference, "Digitalization is a key enabler of our metamorphosis. Tonale is the first car ever to keep a blockchain, non-fungible token. NFTs are based on the same distributed information logic that protects your Bitcoin. It records all data on the blockchain."
Orders for the Tonale will open in the last quarter of this year, with sales expected to begin in 2023.
