MotorTrend’s Pick for ‘Performance Vehicle of the Year’ Didn’t Surprise Anybody

The new Porsche 911 GT3 is an absolutely incredible update to an already exquisite car. Nobody is faulting MotorTrend for picking it as its ‘Performance Vehicle of the Year’.

When Daniel Day-Lewis acts, he wins an Oscar and when the Porsche 911 GT3 goes through an update, it scores incredibly high marks across the board. Oh, and your taxes are due in April. These are just the facts of life, people!
The head editor of MotoTrend, Ed Loh, poetically describes the sensation of driving the GT3 as,”...making you feel sharper and more in tune with everything—from the soles of your feet to the pads of your fingertips, all the way to the base of your skull and the lizard part of your brain that ensures you don't die in your sleep.”
I know another high-end German car company boasts “
The Ultimate Driving Machine
” but its home country rival might just have something to say about that. Let’s dive into why the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 was named MotorTrends ‘Performance Vehicle of the Year’.

Porsche 911: the best keeps getting better

MoterTrend
writer, Jonny Liberman, previously said that earlier updates to the iconic 911 GT3 were cars that he couldn’t find anything bad to write about. That he didn’t know how it could be improved upon, and yet, the unthinkable has been accomplished again.
The new 911 GT3 packs a punch with its 502- hp engine that revs up to 9,000 rpm. While it might not be quite as quick and “supercar-y” (although it’s definitely supercar caliber) as the Lamborghini or Maclaren, it undoubtedly has a superior all-around drive feeling. It’s a car that leads with solidity and everyday ease, the byproduct of which is to keep the pedal pushed.

Design improvements

The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3’s cockpit is minimalism done correctly. Not so scaled back so as to be lacking, but streamlined and functional with elegant simplicity. "I love how simple it is inside—just get in and go," said Deputy editor of MotorTrend, Alexander Stoklosa. “There's a button for ESC, one for the shocks, and that's pretty much it. No fiddling, all fun."
One of the smallest but most impactful design improvements has to do with the manual stick shift. The transmission synchros are made from brass, not plastic. That means when you’re shifting, you’re actually pressing metal through metal.

All-around performance

The combination of speed and grip is unprecedented. You can drive the car into turns with an unthinkable amount of intensity, tap the brakes to make the corner and then heap on the power coming out.
It is a true feat of grip, control, power, and comfort; the latter of which is extremely rare in a car of this sporty echelon. Those Maclarens and Lamborghinis I mentioned up top? Maybe “comfortable” for a few laps on the track but not out in the real world.
“Once you get yourself snug in the seat, you can easily drive the GT3 all day in slow traffic or on a long highway stretch,” said MoterTrend director of operations, Mike Floyd. “The clutch pedal action doesn't punish your left leg, and loping around town is a breeze."
