The
Mercedes
G-Wagen is one of the most instantly recognizable luxury SUVs on the road. However, enthusiasts might have noticed that the G-Wagen, also known as the G-Class has been weirdly absent as of late. The new G-Wagen is an absolutely elegant SUV, and fans have been confused about its absence.
That absence is about to come to an end, though. According to
Car and Driver
, several variants of the Mercedes G-Wagen are slated to return to the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

Why was the Mercedes G-Wagen out of production?

For the 2022 model year, Mercedes had several noteworthy names missing, including the GLE-Class and GLS-Class. The models that were left out of production, which included the G-Wagen, were all powered by V8 engines.
The reason for the absence has been a source of confusion, as Mercedes-Benz has not provided regular updates about the topic.
Generally speaking, though, the overarching supply chain issues have been seen as the biggest source of delays for the G-Wagen. Emissions regulations could have also contributed to the G-Wagen and other Mercedes models being out of production.
Whatever the reason, the Mercedes G-Wagen is coming back! The manufacturer is now accepting orders once again for the G-Wagen as well as some of the other affected models like the GLS-Class. However, not every missing Mercedes-Benz is back on the market, as vehicles like the AMG E63 are still sidelined for the time being.

Now that we know that the G-Wagen is going to be available to buy once again, it's time for a refresher on the SUV's performance. Because the discussion about the Mercedes G-Class is often focused on its aggressive luxury style, it can be easy to forget how well it performs.
As previously stated, the G-Wagen has a V8 engine. More specifically, according to
Car and Driver
, the G-Wagen's engine is twin-turbocharged and 416-horsepower. It can get from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, and it gets positive reviews for having a smooth ride considering its size.
While some might think of the G-Wagen as a car just built for the city, it’s also an SUV that can tackle tough off-road conditions. Its suspension is designed for clearance, and it can drive well on all terrains. The Mercedes G-Wagen is also designed to tow up to 7,000 pounds.

As a luxury status symbol, the G-Wagen is not cheap

The Mercedes G-Wagen is designed to make drivers and passengers feel like they are in a top-quality luxury vehicle. It is well-known that the interior of the G-Wagon is something special. Heated leather seats and more than 50 upholstery options ensure that the G-Wagen is as stylish as it is comfortable.
As for infotainment, the G-Wagen has a user-friendly 12.3-inch screen. The sound system involves 15 speakers throughout the vehicle.
With all of this luxury, though, the G-Wagen is not cheap. The starting MSRP for the G-Wagen is $134,300, getting well past the six-figure mark.
