The 2022 GMC Yukon Denali offers a luxury SUV experience without the six-figure cost at the dealership. Is there a downside to choosing it over an Escalade?

If you need a full-size
SUV
, it’s difficult to argue against the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali. The top trim Yukon delivers all the luxury and convenience drivers have come to expect from the model.
Sure, it doesn’t have the fancy nameplate of a Cadillac Escalade. But with a more powerful base engine and a similarly equipped interior, not choosing the GMC over the luxury car brand looks more like a sign of vanity than anything else.

2022 GMC Yukon Denali—luxury without a luxurious cost

2021 marked the start of a new generation for the GMC Yukon. That means there were a lot more changes to the full-size SUV last year, but GMC made a few tweaks to the vehicle for 2022 as well.
Basically, a few options that were only available in the Denali in 2021 are now available in other trim levels as well. The 12-inch gauge cluster, for example, is now standard, and buyers of the next-lowest trim, the AT4, can choose the more powerful V8 engine option.
But that hasn’t really done much damage to the Denali’s appeal. With its standard
diesel engine
, dual exhaust, 14-speaker Bose stereo, and 15-inch head-up display, it offers plenty to warrant the $3,500 difference between it and the AT4.

Does the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali really stack up to other luxury SUVs?

You can find most of the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali’s features in other SUVs. What you can’t do is find them in a cheaper model.
Take the Cadillac Escalade, for example. Starting at $90,500, it costs at least $9,300 more than a Yukon Denali. And compared side by side, the base Escalade has nothing on the Yukon Denali except a larger touchscreen.
In fact, the Yukon Denali offers a more powerful engine, higher quality leather seats, and a power-sliding center console that isn’t available in the Escalade.
The SUVs’ scores from

seem to indicate that the Escalade is the clear winner between the two. But a closer look reveals that the only real difference between the Yukon Denali and the Escalade is their predicted reliability, not their performance or capability.
