If you're a car lover, you'd know that the quintessential sports car usually combines speed, power, and an eye-catching chassis. The Toyota 86 Hakone Edition is no exception.
Today, the Toyota 86 Hakone Edition thrives as a powerful and engaging vehicle. Top Speed provides insight into the car's specs and performance on the road.
Why the name Hakone?
Hakone is a town southwest of Tokyo with several mountains and spring resorts. Toyota named the 2020 edition to honor the town's iconic pavement, called the Hakone turnpike. The car features a green exterior and bronze-finished wheels to blend with nature.
After introducing the British Racing edition of the 86, Toyota released the 86 Hakone for the U.S. Toyota’s new 86 Hakone is fitted with good looks and specialized parts—nearly identical to the 86 British Racing edition. The green exterior, low center of gravity, driver-assist features, and robust chassis make the Hakone edition a special ride.
Specs on the 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition
The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition has the same power and performance as the 86 British Racing. The entire 86 line features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with up to 205 horsepower. The 86 Hakone can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds, topping out at 140 mph.
It seems the brake calipers and the leather seats are what separate the Hakone from the other 86 models. Rather than the red Brembo brake calipers from the 86 British Racing edition, the 86 Hakone uses different brake calipers which are not red. Other exterior tweaks include power mirrors, chrome exhaust tips, fog lamps, LED headlights.
The Hakone 86 model comes with tan leather seats with black inserts in the middle. You can spot similar color combinations on the center console, dash treatment, and gear selector area.
2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition: a true partner on the road
The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition is a thrilling companion on the road. It utilizes the latest technology to make your ride enjoyable and engaging. However, the Hakone is more expensive than regular 86 models.
In both the manual and automatic versions, the 86 has a Torsen limited-slip differential system. This mechanism slows the car's power in bends and controls the amount of power going to each wheel, making it easier to control and preventing the rear from drifting.
In the interior, the car features a 7-inch screen for an entertainment system with Bluetooth compatibility. The rear camera projects on the rearview mirror, delivering high-quality images of what’s behind the car without obstructions. You can also find stats like horsepower, lap times, and torque curves on the driver display.
Other striking extras on this ride include anti-theft tech, push-to-start, heated seats, and keyless entry. Like most cars made in partnership with Subaru, the 86 Hakone lacks Toyota's Safety Sense package. However, it features their Star Safety suite as a replacement. With that, you have enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, and brake assistance technology.
The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition may not be the most powerful sports car, but it seems to be worth the investment. From the aerodynamic design, weight balance, to suspension geometry, the 86 integrates these aspects to put together an agile sports car with a curated feel.
