A Leaked Photo Shows a Glimpse of Ferrari’s New SUV

Ferrari seems to be trading a spot on the track for a spot in suburbia. Though they’ll continue making speedy supercars, they’re also trying their hand at SUVs with their new car, the Purosangue.

The 2020s will be a defining decade for
new cars
. While most mass-produced car companies are transitioning to
electric cars
, the supercar companies are busy transitioning to SUVs.
Though it seemed like sacrilege only a few years ago, Ferrari will join the likes of Porsche and Lamborghini in making their own SUV.

Why Ferrari is making an SUV

While Ferrari hasn't given an official reason as to why they will be making an SUV, there is plenty of reasonable speculation to fill in the gaps. In 2017, its rival Porsche released their own SUV in the Cayenne. Initially, the Cayenne was welcomed with a tsunami of criticism.
Porsche is known for making legendary sports cars, not SUVs. In the world of speed enthusiasts, SUV is a dirty word left for those who have given up on their racetrack dreams. Despite all the nasty articles and name-calling, the Cayenne was a big seller.
It did so well that the competition took notice. Car companies that were associated with aristocracy and high performance started making their own SUVs in an attempt to replicate Cayenne's success. Lamborghini made the Aventador, Rolls-Royce made the Cullinan, Bentley made the Bentayga, amongst countless other examples of quarter-million-dollar SUVs. It was only a matter of time until Ferrari would make their own SUV.

Photos of the Ferrari SUV

Months ago, leaked images and videos showed a Ferrari SUV. However, there was a lot of ambiguity around these images. It was unclear if Ferrari was just working on a concept car, or if they were actually planning on getting into the SUV game along with their peers. Ferrari never provided an official statement—until very recently.
Just a few days ago, Ferrari finally put the rumors to rest. On their Instagram account, they teased a photo of their SUV with the caption "You've heard the rumours [sic]… and we're delighted to confirm they're true (some of them). All will be revealed later this year."
While confirming that a Ferrari SUV will be coming soon, there are still more questions than answers. The official teaser photo is quite dark, leading internet sleuths to make their own composites of what they think the Ferrari SUV will look like.

What are the specs of the Ferrari SUV?

The only thing we know for certain about the new Ferrari SUV is its name. It will be called "Purosangue", which translates to "purebred" in Italian. Regardless of the uncertainty about what's under the hood,
Car and Driver
has come up with their own speculations.
The iconic car publication believes that the Ferrari Purosangue will have a variety of trims to offer drivers. It is believed that the base trim of the Purosangue will carry a V6 hybrid powertrain. For the true speed demons, it is anticipated that the Ferrari SUV will offer a V12 on its highest-end trim.
In any case, official details should be coming soon. Ferrari anticipates that production and pre-orders will begin later this year. The earliest deliveries of the Ferrari SUV are expected to begin in 2023.
