background
When it comes to
pickup trucks
, brands Toyota and Ford typically come to mind. But that doesn’t mean that new car buyers should restrict themselves to any brand.
For 2022 GMC released their most recent midsize pickup truck, the
Canyon
. Which has some pleasant features and some surprising specs.

Specs on the 2022 GMC Canyon

The GMC Canyon is a midsize four-door pickup truck available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive depending on the trim selected.
The vehicle has a 24-valve V-6 front engine that can get 308 hp at 6,800 rpm, 275 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.
Coming with an eight-speed automatic transmission
Car and Driver
notes that its one of the fastest midsize pickups they’ve tested. While there is a diesel four-cylinder engine available the truck wouldn’t be as fast, but it would be more fuel efficient and have better towing capabilities.
The 2022
GMC Canyon
is a smooth ride on both the highway and one city streets, with the vehicle’s upgraded suspension on the AT4 trim giving an extra oomph to its off-roading capability.
The EPA gives the vehicle an mpg of 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and a combined mpg of 19. In Car and Driver’s fuel economy test they gave it 17 mpg and at a highway speed of 75 mph 21 mpg.
The standard GMC Canyon with a four-cylinder engine can tow 3,500 lbs with a payload capacity of 1,599 lbs. If you opt for the diesel engine it can tow up to 7,700 lbs with a payload capacity of 1,605 lbs.

Features of the GMC Canyon

The 2022 GMC Canyon’s interior focuses on functionality with controls and an instrument panel that are simple to use.
Unfortunately, even on more expensive trims, like the Denali, cheap materials are used Car and Driver’s main issue is that it doesn’t feel “like a premium environment”.
The front seats are spacious, and although the vehicle can seat five, it wouldn’t be comfortable for them with the vehicle’s restricted legroom.
Storage outside of the trunk bed and within the interior includes a bevy of door pockets, a large center-console, and little nooks and crannies here and there to store smaller items.
When it comes to infotainment, the vehicle has a touchscreen that “is attractive and intuitive… easy to use, with rubberized knobs for volume and tuning and redundant hard buttons for quick operations”. Standard features on any model include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
With the SLE trim, on top of those features, you get an 8-inch touchscreen and a 4G LTE hotspot. The Denali trim has wireless charging capabilities and a Bose sound system coming standard.
