Many aficionados of German engineering may call
BMW
vehicles a work of art. In the case of the BMW M850i 8 x Jeff Koons, they would technically be correct. This custom vehicle with a lengthy name is the result of a collaboration with the Bavarian carmaker and a New York artist.
This shouldn't come as a major surprise, as BMW has gotten
colorful with its cars
before. This collaboration with artist Jeff Koons resulted in a unique vehicle, one that costs over $350,000, as reported by

Who is Jeff Koons?

There is little overlap between gearheads and art connoisseurs, but Jeff Koons is a unique exception. Originally from York, PA, Koons would launch his art career in New York in the late ‘70s. While some may debate his breakout piece, many are particularly fond of his Celebration series.
You remember balloon animals? Well, Koons decided to make very large sculptures of those balloon animals in the ‘90s. These large sculptures measure as big as 143 inches by 121 inches, providing a unique perspective on these classic party tricks.
Koons would work on other pieces that brought in big bucks. One of which is Balloon Dog (Orange) which sold for $58.4 million in 2013. It set a record auction price for a piece sold by a living artist.

The BMW M850i Jeff Koons Edition

While Koons is best known for making extra large sculptures of everyday objects, that didn't stop him from taking the opportunity to work with BMW. Specifically, he made a custom-design BMW M850i.
While everything under the hood is the same, Koons had the opportunity to design the exterior paint. He chose to go with a comic book themed design, which has received mixed reviews from both car and art critics. The front grill divides a bright yellow color on the bottom, and on the hood is a checkerboard of sorts with dark and light blue colors.
Along the doors are symbols that will be recognizable to even minor comic book fans: a poof design and an action text bubble with the word "Pop!" Koons also had the chance to design the interior, and decided to go with a blue and red color scheme identical to Spider-man's costume.
Buying one of these BMW M850i Jeff Koons Edition only costs a quarter million more dollars than a regular M850i. Only 99 were made, making this car more of an art investment than an everyday vehicle.

Other BMW art cars

The BMW M850i Jeff Koons Edition is not the first time BMW crossed into the art world by a long shot. In fact, this is the second collaboration between Koons and BMW, the first being a M3 GT2 that made an appearance at the 2010 Le Mans.
BMW first started collaborating with artists as far back as 1975 when Alexander Calder painted a 3.0 CSL. Other notable artists that have collaborated with the German-made car company include Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and Esther Mahlangu.
