Lately, it can feel like car brands are pumping out new models every day. While choosing a new vehicle can be overwhelming, if you’re deciding between the Kona and Tucson—two
Hyundai
SUVs—the choice is actually a no-brainer.
After looking at
Consumer Reports
rating of both vehicles, it’s clear one of these SUVs is the winner. Here’s what you need to know about the Hyundai Kona vs. Tucson, and which comes out on top.

Hyundai Kona vs. Tucson: By the numbers

When comparing the Hyundai Kona vs. Tucson, the Hyundai Tucson wins by a landslide—and it isn’t the first time. Consumer Reports tested an electric or hybrid and a gas-powered version of both vehicles, and the Tucson came out on top in both categories.
The rating website tested the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SEL and gave it an overall score of 93, a road test score of 92, and a perfect 5 out of 5 in reliability and owner satisfaction. The Hyundai Kona Electric fell far behind, with an overall score of 61, a road test score of 76, and a 2 out of 5 in reliability and owner satisfaction.
There was a similar story with the gas-powered vehicles tested. When Consumer Reports tested the SEL Tucson with a four-cylinder engine, reviewerers were blown away. The car earned an overall score of 89, a road test score of 86, and another perfect 5 out of 5 in reliability and owner satisfaction.
Compare that to the Kona’s model with the same engine, which only earned an overall score of 66, a road test score of 71, and a 3 out of 5 in both reliability and owner satisfaction.

What makes the Hyundai Tucson so great?

It’s clear that Consumer Reports found the Hyundai Tucson to be far superior to the Hyundai Kona, but what makes the Tucson so special? For starters, all models of the Tucson are comfortable and convenient to drive. Both the gas and hybrid Tucson scored highly in categories like ride, noise, front and rear seat comfort, usability, and climate system.
Beyond that, the engines work well, regardless of the trim you decide to purchase. The Tucson SEL gets from 0 to 60 mph in 9.6 seconds, while the Tucson SEL Hybrid reaches the same speed in 7.7 seconds. Both models scored well in transmission, routine handling, braking, and emergency handling. Plus, safety features are plentiful in Hyundai cars, and the Tucson is no exception.
