Transportation has evolved since the olden days of horse-driven wagons. Today, advancements in
car technology
have drastically transformed human mobility, and more recently, automakers are leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality to create a metaverse that brings together the virtual and real worlds.
Such was the message that Hyundai sent as it presented its robotics technology at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). During the presentation, the car manufacturer positioned itself as a company with a vision beyond
car electrification
. It showcased its innovations and robots that perform all sorts of tasks, from helping persons with limited mobility to realizing a new concept—metamobility.

Hyundai's spearheading the future of mobility

To achieve its prospect of metamobility, Hyundai intends to create cars that use robotics technology and connect them with a Hyundai metaverse system, to merge the real world and virtual world. As highlighted on
MotorTrend
, Hyundai says the innovation will shape the future of mobility beyond traditional car transport to offer humans unlimited mobility.
The Korean car manufacturer is not new to the robotics world, having run a robotics division for years. In fact, Hyundai the brand partnered with Uber to start developing flying cars. Additionally, the auto brand is the majority shareholder in Boston Dynamics, the Massachusetts-based tech company that developed the dancing robots, Spot and Atlas.
But Hyundai is turning a new leaf by leveraging VR technology to create cars that offer owners a deep virtual experience and enable them to exist in real and virtual worlds. By implementing the metamobility concept, Hyundai cars will be transformed into entertainment and 3D video game spaces, conference rooms, or enable users to visit space with the help of an avatar robot.

How complicated is the Hyundai metaverse venture, and what does it mean?

Hyundai's vision of a robotics-focused metamobility world will be made possible by using robots as a medium connecting the real and virtual worlds. That will ultimately enable vehicles (smart devices) to access virtual spaces, allowing car owners to physically access and experience the conditions and events occurring in the digital world.
The idea underpinning metamobility is that it will eliminate the space, time, and distance barriers. With robots connected to the metaverse, people can move freely between the real and virtual worlds. That goes a step further from the "be there" proxy offered by the metaverse, enabling us to use robots to extend our physical senses to remote locations, thus reshaping and enriching lives.
That will have a significant impact on the manufacturing and business sectors. With Metamobility, Hyundai will empower plant managers to connect to their machines remotely and perform crucial tasks using avatar robots in the metaverse. They can then use hand controls through robots and VR technology to operate equipment in the real world.

Why Hyundai's Metamobility will make people more interested in the car brand

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented changes in the travel and transportation industries by limiting travel. According to
Auto.com
, Hyundai regards the merger between robotics and mobility as a synergistic mix that has the potential of adding value to businesses and fostering advancements for mankind within a Mobility-of-Things infrastructure.
The ability to exist in another location using robots and VR technology installed in a car will particularly draw many buyers towards Hyundai, especially in this COVID-19 era. Corporate professionals will be able to attend virtual meetings while in their vehicles, and plant managers in the U.S. will be able to operate equipment in a facility in Asia. That's Hyundai's value proposition that many people will consider.
Furthermore, the car brand also exhibited its Plug & Drive (PnD) module. This single-wheeled robotics platform uses AI for intelligent steering, braking, in-built electric drive, and adjustable suspension hardware for any size and application. Granted, PnD can help people with limited mobility get around easily. It can also be applied in automated logistics and social-distancing-focused public transportation.
