It’s time to admit it: nearly all of us have wanted to take a Camaro for a joyride around the block (or farther). However, we know it’s not going to happen, even if we ask the dealership nicely for a test drive. But for a group of determined car thieves, getting their hands on Chevy’s signature muscle car wasn’t determined by a dealership’s willingness to let them test drive it.

One wild joyride

Press Las Vegas
outlined how a Lansing, Michigan GM plant lost seven Camaros this month. It was a high-speed heist that ended with five drivers in jail, thanks to a helicopter and police cars in high pursuit.
Several of the vehicles were stopped thanks to spike strips, but despite this helping the police recover the cars, it didn’t help GM get its cars back. Most of the cars suffered notable damage. Considering the chase got up to speeds of over 100 mph, it makes sense.
Two of the vehicles are still missing, and police are looking for information both on the whereabouts of the drivers and the missing ZL1 Camaros. In total, nine individuals were arrested, but all were released the following day due to further investigation needing to be conducted toward the incident.

A history of stolen Camaros for GM

This most recent incident wasn’t actually the first time that this particular GM facility had experienced a Camaro theft. Also, considering that most of the seven vehicles stolen this May were valued at an incredible $375,000, GM is working with Michigan police in order to tighten up security at its production facilities.
March and August of 2021 were also marked by Camaro thefts. It’s not known how the thieves managed to get in, or if they knew any employees at the GM plant.

How common is it to have a Camaro stolen?

The Chevy Camaro is in fact the most commonly-stolen sports car in the U.S., topping a list that includes the Ford Mustang and BMW models. If you’re a Camaro owner, beware.
One of the best ways to deter thieves is to park your vehicle inside a garage, behind a gate, or in front of a well-lit entrance to your home. If you do have your vehicle stolen, report the theft immediately to local law enforcement.
