, but how do they determine those things? Consumer Reports is a non-profit that independently buys thousands of cars (and other products) each year to rank them. Their self-run tests are also paired with data reported from hundreds of thousands of Consumer Reports subscribers.
When it comes to ranking cars, Consumer Reports gives each vehicle an overall score, which is determined by a road test evaluating over 50 objective and subjective features to produce a score, a predicted reliability score that’s determined by survey data from subscribers, plus an owner satisfaction score that’s also determined by survey data.
For their list of top safest affordable SUVs (that the Buick Envision placed third on) Consumer Reports took into account the overall score, plus standard safety features and crash rankings and base price.

What’s great about the Buick Envision?
The Buick Envision is a highly-rated SUV due to its safety features, affordable base price, luxurious features, and more. The Buick Envision earned an overall score of 84 out of 100 from Consumer Reports, and the SUV comes standard with forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, and blind spot warning (BSW).
Although the Kia Telluride takes first place on the list of safest, affordable SUVs, the Buick Envision isn’t too far behind in third place.
Consumer Reports was particularly impressed by the Buick Envision’s luxury interior, including a large and easy to use infotainment system, for a price point starting at $31,500.
The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine provides power and strength to the SUV with its nine-speed automatic transmission pairing. Not to mention, the ride in this SUV is smooth, and drivers can choose between front-wheel and all-wheel drive.
Does the Buick Envision fall short anywhere?
Although Consumer Reports ranks the Buick Envision highly, there are still a few things that could be improved upon in the car. For example, the fuel economy is only 23mpg overall, which is pretty average.
Consumer Reports found the handling to be a little clunky on this car and revealed the optional 20-inch tires can compromise comfort. Reviewers also weren’t fans of the push-pull electronic gear selector setup because it takes some getting used to while driving.
Overall, these complaints are minor but worth noting.
