The 120-year-old heritage brand
GMC
is targeting a new market for the first time. The brand known for its durability and performance will be joining fellow General Motors subsidiaries Chevrolet and
Cadillac
in South Korea.
While the announcement was first made late last year, the new @gmckorea Instagram account popped up on June 15th, marking the formal launch of GMC’s marketing efforts.

sees just why GMC chose to launch in South Korea and what the brand plans to bring to the market.

Why GMC chose South Korea

According to
GM Authority
, South Korea will be the third global market to welcome GMC vehicles after North America and the Middle East. GMC is utilizing its longstanding success in the world’s largest and most lucrative truck automotive markets to bolster its launch in South Korea.
While pickup trucks have had a stronghold on North American markets for over a century, a recent launch of the Chevy Colorado in South Korea exceeded expectations.
In 2020, following its introduction to the South Korean Market, General Motors launched its flagship model in South Korea—the Chevrolet Colorado.
The Chevy Colorado was a first for both General Motors and South Korea, marking the first locally introduced North American pickup truck in South Korea and the Chevy Colorado’s first time being sold outside of North America.
According to
GM Authority
, it was the only true pickup truck being sold in the country at the time and earned a spot as one of the five best-selling imported models in South Korea.
In a statement reported by GM Authority in September of 2020, President and CEO of GM Korea Kaher Kazem hinted at what was to come for the South Korean market, foreshadowing the eventual introduction of the GMC brand.
“We are confident that we will continue to lead the pickup truck market and present a good alternative to those seeking to expand their lifestyle and the customer experience in the domestic automobile market,” said Kazem.
Since the launch of the Chevy Colorado, GM Korea has also introduced the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Traverse, and Chevy Equinox.

What’s in store for GMC Korea

GM’s strategy in South Korea is focused on utility vehicles, and the GMC launch is no exception.
The first product GMC plans to launch in the South Korean market is the
2022 GMC Sierra 1500
, and the GMC Sierra Denali will be the first model sold in the South Korean market as a 2023 model.
“The domestic launch of the GMC brand would further expand the product portfolio of GM Korea while meeting the needs of those who pursue various lifestyles,” said GM Korea Vice President of Sales, Service and Marketing, Carlos Meinert as reported by GM Authority.
“GMC is a crucial component of the multi-brand strategy in Korea, creating a synergy with Chevrolet and Cadillac.”
Sales will start in the second half of 2022, and interested buyers will even be able to purchase the 2023 GMC Sierra Denali online.
