Are
American-made cars
in it for the long haul? Cars from Japanese makers like
Toyota
and
Honda
are infamous for their longevity, but only one American car—the
Ford F150
—made the cut in
Consumer Reports’
survey of “Cars Proven To Get To 200,000 Miles”.
All things considered, most cars could be made to reach the 200k milestone with enough work, but the rides that made the list did so with the fewest problems possible.
Predictably, Toyota and Honda dominated every other spot in the category — but the iconic Ford F-150 slid in at No. 12.

A feat for the F-150

Being the only American-made car on the list is certainly an accomplishment for Ford, but what about it gives this car its longevity?
For starters, the Ford F-150 is America’s best-selling pickup truck and has been the best-selling domestically-produced car in the U.S. for over 40 years. With the sheer popularity and availability on its side, maintenance might be a priority. The F150 is almost ubiquitous on the used car market as well.
According to a separate report in
iSeeCars
, pickup trucks are the most likely to reach 200,000 miles of all vehicle types, with 1.8% of all models making it to the mark.
“Pickup trucks are commonly used as work vehicles and are likely to accrue more miles than a typical passenger car while being more likely to undergo preventative maintenance and necessary repairs,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly.

Toyota and Honda reign supreme

While snagging a spot on the list was certainly an accomplishment for Ford, it’s clear that Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda have longevity down to a science.
Toyota took the No. 1 spot with the ever-reliable Camry and went on to occupy six more places on the list with the Prius at No. 3, the Sienna at No. 5, the Highlander at No. 6, the 4Runner at No. 7, the Corolla at No. 8 and the Tacoma at No. 9.
Honda came in a close second with the Accord, followed up by the CR-V at No. 4, the Odyssey at No. 10, and the Pilot at No. 11.
If you’ve driven any of these cars—new or used—you’ve likely gotten a lifetime and then some out of it, but why do they consistently last so much longer than American cars? One theory is that Japanese automakers build out cars specifically for longevity, while American automakers may be more inclined to design for features such as power and performance, prioritizing profit over long-term usage.
While this may have worked for American automakers in the past, with the current supply chain issues such as
microchip shortages
making it harder for suppliers to meet demand, American cars could fall out of favor with consumers for failing to deliver on endurance and consistency.
