Going Green: The Ford Bronco Sport Will Be Using Recycled Plastic for Parts

Ford has started using all recycled plastic parts in the production of its award-winning SUV. With sea garbage collected from the Indian and Arabian oceans, this recycled plastic is 10% cheaper to re-purpose, and more energy-efficient than traditional plastics.

The Ford Bronco Sport just keeps getting better. The widely popular SUV will be the first of
Ford’s
line-up to use entirely recycled plastic parts. While recycling ocean plastic is a start, Ford, like other manufacturers, is starting to dive into the EV market, too.
Repurposing the wasted plastic in our oceans is helping Ford reduce the ecological impact of their vehicles—one kickass Ford Bronco Sport at a time.

Where is Ford getting the ocean plastic for the Ford Bronco Sport?

Ford’s recycled plastic is coming from the Indian and Arabian oceans, helping to whittle down the size of the massive trash islands that
JD Power and Associates
notes are clogging our waterways and threatening wildlife.
Ford has partnered with DSM Engineering Materials to collect the plastic waste from the ocean. The plastic is then superheated by an injection molding company, HellermannTyton. The company then uses molds to create the desired shape of the plastic partners needed to produce the Ford Bronco Sport.
This process might sound complicated, but the American carmaker says that this production method saves them 10% in costs compared to using non-recycled plastics. The Ford Bronco Sport may be the first vehicle to use entirely recycled plastic parts, but Ford experimented with the Escape back in 2020, using recycled plastic in the compact SUV’s undercarriage.
And with up to 13 million tons of plastic waste entering the oceans every year, taking the initiative to recycle at least some of it is a smart move by Ford.

What Ford Bronco Sport parts will use recycled plastic?

The plastic parts that the Ford Bronco Sport uses will escape the average owner’s attention. The recycled ocean plastic will be used for the wiring harness clips that are used to hold the wires for the Ford Bronco Sport’s side-deploying airbag system. This might seem like a small step but remember—carmakers have to start somewhere.
In the future,
Ford
plans to use ocean plastic to manufacture transmission brackets, wire shields, and floor side rails in their vehicles. And with the same strength, durability, and quality as non-recycled plastic, Ford may prompt other companies to start using repurposed ocean waste, too.
For Ford fans who really want to maximize on an eco-friendly vehicle, the Ford F-150 Lightning or Ford Bronco EV could be right up their alley.
