The Fiat 600: Over the Years

The Fiat 600 was never as popular as the Fiat 500 released two years later, but this compact car offered the space to seat four with the efficiency of a city car.

When it comes to
collector cars
, some people go for the souped-up muscle cars, while others search for the
timeless American classics
. The Fiat 600 isn’t either of those things, but it's a charming car with an unmistakable look, loads of character, and a remarkable history.
Read on with the car ownership experts at Jerry as we dive into everything you need to know about the Fiat 600.

The Fiat 600 redefined the family car

The Fiat 600 was in production from 1955 to 1969 and was introduced to the market just two years before the Fiat 500 Nuova made its debut.
According to Auto Evolution, the 600 was intended to be a replacement for the Topolino family car that had been off the market since 1936. The Italian automaker struggled to recover post-WWII, but the 600 showed a glimmer of hope.
The 600’s success was quickly eclipsed by the more popular 500, but the 600 had more to offer than a city car.

The Fiat 600 from 1955 - 1969

The Fiat 600 was designed by Dante Giacosa, the same designer who had created the Topolino. While Giacosa was personally a fan of front-wheel drive, Fiat insisted that the 600 have a rear engine.
It was big enough to fit four adults and the unique, bubble-like roof left ample headspace for its passengers.
The interior featured a long metallic dash panel and an instrument cluster that was installed in front of the driver’s seat. While this car could accommodate four, it was still quite the cozy ride.
It was designed to be very narrow, so handles to close the doors and vinyl pockets were added to the doors. There was even a small shelf mounted under the dashboard.
The Fiat 600 was powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder engine that produced 21 horsepower.

A brief revival from 2005 - 2007

On the 50th anniversary of the original Fiat 600 release, the Italian automaker changed the name of the Seicento (six hundred) to the 600.
The 2005 model paid homage to the 1955 Fiat badge design and even included a limited edition 50th anniversary model.
The anniversary model came in a light tan color and featured unique markings as well as specially-designed eight-spoke wheels. The 2005 Fiat 600 came with a 1.1-liter four-pot engine, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
