Japanese domestic models or
JDMs
, as they’re lovingly referred to, draw awe and curiosity from many U.S. car subcultures. Overlanders will drool over a Mitsubishi Delica. Novelty car collectors and eco-conscious drivers will gaze longingly at the country’s kei car segment.
But the car enthusiasts with the most passion for Japan’s auto industry, the group that coined the “JDM” term, is the street racing and drifting community.
The country’s reputation for pumping out affordable high-performance sports cars has U.S. drivers clamoring for the coupes sent across the Pacific and waiting decades to legally ship the models exclusively sold in Japan.
Jerry
, your car insurance super app, isn’t going to tempt you with what you can’t have, so here are the three fastest new sports cars from Japan that you can actually buy in America.

The Nissan Z—a new generation ups the ante

Nissan has been producing its Z-cars since the first Fairlady arrived in 1969. The 2023 model introduces its seventh generation, dropping the numbers from the name to simply call it the Z. Once you get it on the track, the improvements made to the sports car are immediately obvious.
While design changes are subtle, the car’s performance easily surpasses the outgoing 370Z. Thanks to its 3,252-lbs. curb weight, the 2023 Z’s 3.7-liter twin-turbo V6 can send the car to 60 mph in a very fast 3.5 seconds.

The Nissan GT-R—the Z’s sibling rival

While the automaker’s reputation sunk pretty low in the past decade or so, new management at Nissan seems intent on bringing the nameplate back into standing in the sports car segment. No better proof of this can be found than the Nissan GT-R.
Sure, the GT-R will cost you almost three times that of its sibling, but with an engine option that can offer 600 horsepower and bring you to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, those with the extra cash will definitely find it worth spending on the
pricier sports car

The Acura NSX Type S—unpassable in Japan

Nissan might’ve stepped up its game, but it hasn’t reached the top of the JDM podium. For models sold in the U.S., that honor goes to Acura and its NSX Type S. One look at the car, and the fact that it’s the fastest Japanese model of 2022 won’t surprise you.
The only model on the list that truly looks like a supercar, the NSX Type S can reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, thanks to its 600-hp V6 hybrid powertrain.
With the design and performance of a supercar comes the price of a supercar, too, though. With an MSRP of $171,500 and a production limit of 350 units, the Acura NSX Type S doesn’t exactly offer the same performance-to-value ratio that JDMs are known for.

Finding coverage for a JDM sports car

While true JDMs, the cars sold exclusively in Japan, have access to classic car coverage once they’re legal to own in the U.S., the cars on this list aren’t so lucky. Their fresh model years and high-speed intended use mean car insurance won’t be cheap.
But Jerry can help you save money on coverage for any type of car. A licensed broker, Jerry does all the hard work of finding cheap quotes from the top name-brand insurance companies and buying new car insurance. Jerry will even help you cancel your old policy.
And to ensure you always have the lowest rate, Jerry will send you new quotes every time your policy comes up for renewal, so you’re always getting the coverage you want at the best price.
This level of service is why Jerry earned a 4.7/5 rating on the App Store and made it the top insurance app in the country.
