Chevelle SS
If you're in the market for a truly unique muscle car,
Chevrolet
may have produced the ideal car for your taste. The 1969 Chevelle SS 396 sported a unique feature that makes it a rarity in the muscle field.
1969 was the only year Chevy offered the SS 396 with a post coupe option, making it stand out from the Chevelle lineup in other model years when the vehicle had only hardtop and convertible body styles.
Chevrolet is estimated to have sold only around 1,400 of the SS 396 with the post coupe option that year, making it a good possibility to be a rare barn find.

Why a post coupe option?

Hagerty Media
speculates that Chevy was concerned about the competition from the Plymouth Road Runner that debuted in 1968 when it offered the post coupe option on the 1969 Chevelle Super Sport 396.
A post coupe differs from a hardtop in that there is a post between the front door and back window of the two-door coupe. In a hardtop, when the front and back windows are rolled down, it creates a single, large opening.
The 396 previously was considered a separate model with higher-end finishes than the Chevelle, but by putting the 396 touches on the Chevelle frame, Chevy intended to create a more economical model to compete with the Road Runner.
Chevrolet did offer the hardtop and convertible bodies in the 1969 Chevelle, as well, and they proved more popular than the post coupe, which led Chevy to drop the version after just one model year.
