Drivers In Massachusetts Waited 9 Hours for Free Gas

Massachusetts residents waited nine or more hours to get free gas offered by Ernie Boch, the billionaire owner of Boch Enterprises.

Gas prices are among the highest rates we've seen in years, with many turning to
eco-friendly cars
in an effort to lower their costs at the pump.
Insurance rates
are often high as well, meaning people are paying more than ever just to get from point A to point B.
For those Massachusetts drivers who still rely on gas-powered vehicles, the enticing promise of free gas the next morning caused many to sit and wait all night for the 7 am start time.
With limited
fuel
available for free, and the first-come, first-serve criteria, most didn't bother waiting for the morning to get in line. Some showed up as early as 9:30 pm the night before, and the line began growing significantly between then and the early morning hours.

A Massachusetts car dealer offered 7,000 free gallons of gas

The person responsible for this deal was Ernie Boch Jr.
Mass Live
explains how Boch boasted an "April Fuels" day perk, rather than a prank.
He posted on social media about the offer and said that he'd be giving 7,000 gallons of free gas away to whoever showed up first to get it on April 1.
All people had to do was get in line at Rojo CarWash in Norwood, MA, and they'd receive the octane of their choosing. Boch is the CEO of Boch Enterprises, which is a $1 billion company with numerous dealerships. He wanted to give back in a big way to his customers and other patrons in town.

Who was first in line for the free gas?

The very first person in line arrived at 9:30 at night. Patrick Haines, a local resident, decided he couldn't pass up the opportunity since gas prices have been eating away at his wallet. He felt like he was getting some of that money back with this offer.
Though most of the people in line were from the town in question, others drove from farther away to get the free gas provided. One man came from North Attleborough, which is at least 30 minutes away from the car wash.
Many people couldn't believe anyone would give something away for free, especially to this extent, but they were extremely pleased and grateful that Boch made the decision to do so.

More than 300 people benefitted

Within just 90 minutes of the event starting, more than 300 vehicles made their way through the line to get the free gas that was offered.
More fuel was provided at no charge than was originally stated. Instead, 8500 gallons were given away to everyone who showed up early to wait for this incentive.
Gas wasn't the only free thing provided, either. A previous social media post also advertised free food and coffee.
With $4.15 per gallon listed for fuel at the time of the event according to
CBS Boston
, however, that was enough encouragement for people to wait in line to get their tanks filled.
The Norwood Police Department was in on the plan. They were there to help divert traffic and keep the lines moving along well. The Police Chief, Bill Brooks, said he met with Boch on Wednesday to discuss the Friday event, and he was more than happy to help make this happen for his townspeople.
