Does the 2022 Toyota Tundra Beat Out the 2021 Ford F-150?

background
When it comes to well-known and iconic
pickup trucks
, you would have difficulty overlooking the
Ford F-150
. Introduced in 1975 and having only gotten more upgrades since then, the F-150 has been a well-regarded pickup truck for over forty years. However, the new Toyota Tundra may be able to stand toe-to-toe with Ford's stalwart vehicle.

The Ford F-150 is a best seller for a reason

When a car has been around for four and a half decades, it generally has nothing left to prove to the competition. For the Ford F-150, this statement holds all the way to its 2021 version. The full-size pickup truck shows this in its laidback design, which hasn't changed significantly in years.
Despite the comfortably consistent design, the Ford F-150 has not gone without its share of changes. The 2021 model comes equipped with six different powertrains, including a hybrid version for the first time in the truck's history. These powertrains include models with upgraded towing capacity, higher performance, and even touches of luxury rarely seen in a full-size pickup truck.
The base F-150 engine is a 400-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. The Ecoboost hybrid powertrain contains the same 400-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 along with a 35 kW electric motor, both of which will offer up to 700 miles of driving range per tank. Every engine configuration comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota has come out swinging with the 2022 Toyota Tundra

As far as pickup trucks go, Toyota is generally more well-known for the Tacoma, which has dominated the midsize market. However, the 2022 Tundra represents Toyota's attempt to gain a foothold in the field of full-size trucks.
Unlike Ford and the F-150's more traditional and relaxed appearance, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is styled to look large and aggressive. Its massive, gaping grille with folded sheet inlays makes the Tundra look like it's here to devour other trucks in its path.
For performance, the Tundra offers a 389-horsepower 3.4-liter turbocharged V6. Its hybrid powertrain, marketed as the i-Force Max, comes equipped with a combined output of 437-horsepower with an electric motor-generator and clutch between the engine and the transmission. Like the F-150, the Toyota Tundra's engine also sports a 10-speed automatic transmission.

How do the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 stack up?

MotorTrend
performed a comparison test between the 2022 Toyota Tundra and the 2021 Ford F-150 to see whether Toyota's new full-size pickup truck could compete with Ford's flagship truck. While the two remained close to each other in many comparisons, the F-150 edged out the Tundra in a few categories.
Putting their performance next to each other, the F-150 has slightly better horsepower in its base engine than the Tundra. However, the F-150 also weighs about a quarter-ton less than the Tundra, making it more nimble in terms of acceleration and handling. In addition, the F-150's fuel economy numbers sit at one mpg better in city, highway, and combined measurements than the Tundra.
The Tundra's interior features are more modern in their aesthetics than the F-150, though the buttons, knobs, and switches in the F-150 are easier to use. Both trucks provide a large amount of space, particularly in the back. However, the F-150 offers more storage room, with seat bottoms that fold up, a flat floor, and storage bins that can be folded away.
In terms of cost, the Toyota Tundra comes away slightly higher than the F-150, at $60,188, versus Ford's price of $58,575. However, the extra cost doesn't seem worth it when comparing the two vehicles.
