As we hold our breath for
the gull-winged Alpha5
to debut in 2024, DeLorean just revealed two new concept cars—a sleek, futuristic off-roader and a wagonlike take on the Alpha. If you’re in the market for a
new vehicle
, could these electric roadsters be worth waiting for?

DeLorean concept cars build on the Alpha5

Earlier in 2022, DeLorean
previewed the 2024 Alpha5
, of which only 88 track-only models will be produced. In fact, if you’d like to reserve an Alpha of your own, you can become a lifetime member of the DeLorean Alphas Club for just $88.
The Alpha5 DeLorean concept car is rumored to have a mix of artificial support and advanced driver-assist systems.
While few specific details have been released, we do know that the Alpha5 is an electric luxury sedan featuring DeLorean’s signature gull-wing doors. The company partnered with Italdesign, which also helped design the old-school DeLorean DMC-12. The born-again vehicle will feature a louvered rear window and new sleek styling.
DeLorean CEO Joost de Vries assured buyers that the Alpha5 will stand up to the Mercedes-AMG GT and potentially high-end Porsche Taycans as well. The Alpha5 is actually meant to cater to the gas-powered crowd instead of trying to become quicker than the Tesla Model S Plaid.
According to
Car and Driver
, “The Alpha2 roadster was meant to represent what DeLorean would have made in 1996. The Alpha3 luxury sedan pretends to be from 2006, and the Alpha4 is a 2013-era SUV with a hydrogen powertrain.” The three DeLorean concept cars were brought to Pebble Beach by DeLorean Motors as well.

DeLorean concept cars go back to the future

The company then debuted the wagonesque Alpha5 Plasmatail (an extension of the original coupe) and the 2040 Omega, a swoopy take on the Alpha5 that carries lots of cargo in the rear.
The 2024 Alpha5 Plasmatail is a hatchback-style variant that fits just as many passengers but offers much more space for storage. The Plasmatail will allegedly be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.99 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph.
The all-wheel-drive sedan is predicted to have a 300-mile range supported by a 100.0-kWh battery. We also expect to see a multi-model adaptive suspension from this DeLorean concept car.
While past DeLorean concepts focused on a fictional past, the 2040 Omega concept has its sights set on the future. The DeLorean design skillfully marries the design freedom of an electric powertrain with the attitude of an off-road racer. It also looks a lot like a spaceship.
The off-road-themed racer rides on massive, chunky wheels with a large windshield that extends from the tail lights to the grille. The hourglass-shaped body appears aerodynamic and quite athletic when viewed from the top.
