The Citroën DS was first revealed at the 1955 Paris Motor Show. According to
AutoRevolution,
it held the highest record for automotive preorders until the release of the Tesla Model 3.With the cab surrounded by its oval-like frame, it looked more like a small spaceship than a car. The Citroën DS also had some mechanical innovations, particularly its hydraulic systems. It used hydraulic components for the transmission, brakes, power steering, and suspension.
Hydraulics in the suspension gave the DS a unique self-leveling quality, which made it easier for drivers to handle. It also had one of the earliest examples of an adaptive headlight system. Whenever you turned the wheel, the headlights would move along with it.
However, the engine power was very lackluster on earlier models. Fortunately, it was replaced in 1968 with a 2.2-liter inline-four that made up to 127 horsepower.
Drivers could choose between either a fuel-injected or dual-carburetor setup. With fuel injection, the DS had a top speed of almost 117 mph.
The most desirable version of the Citroën DS is the DS23, which was released in the ’70s. In addition to new design quirks, it got a 132-horsepower engine. These models could also have an upgraded five-speed manual transmission.

The Citroën DS was replaced by the CX in 1974. The XM sedan would take its place, followed by the family-sized Citroën C5. Though discontinued in the early 2000s, the C5X was revived last year with an all-new hybrid powertrain.
The Citroën C5X has a gas engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 225 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. The steering wheel is surprisingly light and responsive, a trait that many Citroën vehicles lack.
The Citroën C5X also has a cushy suspension, just like the one which made the DS so popular. The C5X's suspension features active dampening, automatically adjusting itself to fit any road conditions. While the brakes require a longer stopping distance, the crossover always comes to a smooth halt.

The cost of a used Citroën DS can vary depending on the model year, overall condition, and transmission choice. While the Citroën DS was available in North America, the European versions are more valuable among collectors.
