The Chevy Spark’s name might be a bit too literal, as drivers are reporting sparks, and other transmission problems, with the newest
Chevrolet
model. Unfortunately, the Chevy Spark has a history of recalls and issues, but transmission problems are of the most serious offenses—a failed transmission can make your car undrivable.
Transmission problems are not something to take lightly.

The Chevy Spark transmission problem

The 2022 Chevy Spark is a subcompact car, starting as low as $13,600. It’s powered by a 1.4-liter, gas-powered motor that puts out just 98 hp and 94 lb-ft of torque. These statistics wouldn’t be so bad, given the price of the vehicle, if not for the problems associated with the car.
According to
Firestone Complete Auto Care
, the Chevy Spark transmission problems present themselves as sparks coming from the engine, shifting delays, jumping or grinding acceleration, shaking, whistling noises, or a burning smell. Transmission problems can cause fuel economy loss, driving delays, and worst of all, irreversible damage to the car.
Car Complaints
reports the worst year for the Chevy Spark transmission is 2014, with 28 different problems reported, but every year since 2011 has had at least one transmission issue.

It’s not the only problem drivers are reporting

Unfortunately, drivers have reported other issues with Chevy Spark, beyond just transmission issues. According to
CARHP
, over the years, the Chevy Spark has seen issues with the engine, such as excessive oil consumption, engine shut down after hitting speed breaker, and the engine refusing to accelerate.
On top of that, safety issues have been reported with the Chevy Spark. Drivers have reported airbags failing to deploy, wrong deployment of airbags, and hard airbags. Evidently, there have been multiple recalls on the Chevy Spark throughout the years. According to
Car Complaints
, the worst year of the Chevy Spark, with the most problems overall, was 2013—avoid that model year at all costs!

Signs of a failing transmission

According to
Hare Chevy
, there are a few telltale signs your Chevy Spark might be having transmission issues. Here’s what to look for:
  • Delays in gear shifts.
  • Fluid leaks.
  • Strange smells or flashes coming from your car.
  • Grinding noises, especially when shifting gears.
  • Transmission warning light on.

How to prevent Chevy Spark transmission problems

Although transmission issues are sometimes the fault of the car brand and unavoidable, there are things you can do to mitigate the problem. Hare Chevy recommends getting regular
transmission fluid
and filter changes, as well as a transmission flush if there is dirt or debris in your filter.
Additionally, regular car maintenance done by a professional—like tire rotations and oil changes —can help combat problems or catch them early. And remember, if you suspect transmission problems or any other issue with your car, get it to a mechanic as soon as possible.
