Chevrolet
has many good vehicles on the market, some well-liked by critics. But, when you look back several decades, they've produced a few awful ones. Time listed 50 automobiles that they felt were the worst of all time, and Chevy had five of its models listed. Which ones are they, why were they so bad, and are they the worst to
insure
as well?

1960-1980 Chevy vehicles that didn't impress the critics

According to the
Time
, the oldest Chevy on the list was the 1961 Corvair, a small rear-engine car that was fun to drive for the most part. However, it was harder to control because of the heavy back end, which made it easier to crash.
Vehicles like the Corvair were banned in World War II, specifically in Czechoslovakia, because they killed too many German officers. Chevy could've made it a good car if they only spent the money to revamp the rear suspension system, but they never did.
Next is the 1976 Chevy Chevette, which was GM's answer to the energy crisis at that time, according to
MotorTrend
. The car offered a 51-hp engine and a four-speed manual transmission.
However, that's about all you got. It sorely lacked features and wasn't the greatest thing to look at, either. GM built cars to outshine Ford's simpler vehicles, but this model fell short.

1980-1990 Chevy cars that didn't live up to the hype

Next up is the 1980 Corvette, 305 "California" version. Emissions requirements in the ‘70s toned down quite a few high-powered vehicles, but California implemented even stricter rules. The 350-cubic-inch engine in the Corvette had to be switched out for a 305-cubic-inch one instead.
Unfortunately, the change did the Corvette no favors, only allowing the V8 engine to generate 180 hp, which just didn't cut it. To make matters worse, Chevy installed a three-speed automatic that took all the fun out of a muscle car.
In 1982, the Chevy Camaro Iron Duke model came out. The name suggests power, but this Camaro version was far from it. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine was too small and only produced about 90 hp.
Performance-wise, this model could only muster a 0-60 mph run in approximately 20 seconds. That's unbecoming of a muscle car like the Camaro when similar models could do better.

2004 Chevy SSR, the worst pickup design

The SSR was a hot rod pickup that resembled a truck (sort of) but sat lower to the ground like a car. Many people criticized its looks, calling it ugly. But it did sport a 5.3-liter V8 engine that could produce 300 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, so the performance was there.
However, when it came to function, the SSR was pretty useless. This pickup had a towing capacity of 2,500 lbs, which isn't much when you compare it to other trucks at that time. It's not surprising that the run of this odd-looking pickup was pretty short.

Are Chevy vehicles the worst to insure?

For the most part, Chevys aren't the worst to insure, but it will depend on the model you buy, the year the vehicle is from, and items specific to your situation. Getting the best insurance while saving money is great, but it's not always easy.
