background
Mid-size Luxury SUVs are considered some of the safest to drive. These sports utility vehicles or SUVs are popular and always changing with new tech features and add-ons for any adventure, from camping and off-roading to little league practice.
Every year Car and Driver ranks the best and worst for many types of vehicles. For mid-size luxury crossover
SUVs
, they decided this year to do 22 for 2022.

The worst of the 2022 SUVs

With how many cars are coming out every year, 22 SUVs doesn’t seem like a lot. But
Car and Driver
made their picks, and the worst of their top 22 go to:
  • Lexus GX
  • Lincoln Nautilus
  • Maserati Levante
The Lexus GX starts at a base price of $57,200, clearly not on the end of the list worst for the price as the Maserati Levante costs $80,895 for its basic trim.
Car and Driver put the Lexus GX in last place for being a relic, making a note of one engine option (a 4.6 liter V-8); they claim to be “thirsty” and mark it as “unwillingness to get with the times.”
The second to last place, Lincoln Nautilus, is the cheapest of these worst top 22, coming in at $44,755.
Its crime? It seems to be a fine vehicle.
“The ride is comfortable and controlled.” It seems to be a revised version of an older Lincoln vehicle and not as cool as the other Lincoln options which seems why it earned it spot #21.
The Maserati Levante though Car and Driver, had a little more to say. Mostly how much they loved it. Except that the price tag didn’t match the “low-rent materials,” and for an SUV, the “cargo room is stingy.”

The best of the 2022 SUVs

So if the worst complaints for the 2022 last place SUVs were not a ton of engine options, lower grade materials than expected for the price, and stingy cargo what gold can be found at the top of the Car and Driver list?
In third place for Car and Driver’s top mid-size luxury crossover SUVs is the BMW X5; their reasoning is surprising.
Mostly, they open with “The BMW X5 lineup is mostly unchanged for the 2022 model year…” which seems to be the exact reason the Lexus GX was given #22 on their list and arguably one of the reasons the Lincoln Nautilus also was placed in #21, for not being newer or innovative enough compared to newer models.
The BMW X5 comes in a limited edition Black Vermilion, available to only 350 BMW X5s. Thankfully unlike the cars in the back of the SUV pack, Car and Driver writes more on why they like their top three vehicles.
For the BMW X5, they note how nice it is to drive and applaud the BMW’s electrical system. And, of course, add-ons. Any car is nicer with add-ons. But without them? The basic cost of a BMW X5 comes in at $61,595.
Second place goes to the Porsche Cayenne, which has been popular since it first debuted in 2003.
According to Car and Driver, the 2022 update includes better infotainment options like the pretty standard wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, which makes one wonder why this wasn’t available on earlier models for a Porsche.
But hey, Porsche welcome to the times; I guess you moved there faster than Car and Driver thought the Lexus GX did. The basic trim for the 2022 Porsche Cayenne comes to $70,350.
Going home with the gold from Car and Driver is the 2022 Genesis GV80. The GV80 has two available engine’s and the basic trim starts at $51,295. However, it’s not the basic trim that won Car and Driver over; instead, it’s their most expensive trim, the 3.5T Prestige.
