In the past, the
Ford
F-150 has been offered with a Power Stroke V6 turbo-diesel engine as one of the options. However,
Ford F-150 diesel
option will be unavailable in future models.
Ford's focus has indeed changed with the announcement that it will be going fully electric soon. Let's explore the change and what engine options to expect with the popular truck.

When and why the Ford F-150 diesel is being discontinued

According to
Car and Driver
, Ford will be closing orders for the Power Stroke 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel on July 16. However, you can still get the diesel truck if you order it before the cut-off date. The reason for the discontinuation of the engine option is that other engine options, led by the EcoBoost, are much more eco-friendly.
Some customers loved the Ford F-150 diesel engine due to its efficiency and towing ability. However, the company says that its PowerBoost hybrid has better fuel economy and torque than this diesel option.
Ford started offering the V6 turbo-diesel engine in 2018, and it has remained largely unchanged over the years. Its performance has recently started falling behind, as it produces just 250 horsepower. This makes it the least powerful engine in the F-150 lineup.
However, this does not mean that the automaker has done away with diesel engines.
The Fast Lane Truck
explains that medium and heavy-duty Fords will continue to use diesel engines. One of the latest additions is the Power Stroke V8 engine, which is installed in the Ford Super Duty truck lineup.

What are the other engine options available apart from the Ford F-150 diesel?

There are two engine options for the Ford F-150. Buyers have a choice of a V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and has a capacity of 3.3 liters or the EcoBoost V6 engine that produces 325 horsepower and has a displacement of 2.7 liters.
However, those that need more torque may benefit from the PowerBoost engine capabilities on their truck. The PowerBoost option on the Ford F-150 runs on a 3.5-liter hybrid V6 engine that produces 430 hp and a whopping 570 lb-ft of torque. This option also has better fuel economy than the diesel engine, with a combined EPA rating of 24 mpg.

Ford F-150 diesel to electric

The automaker has unveiled the
electric Ford F-150
while stopping production of the Ford F-150 diesel. Ford has also announced that it will unveil three new electric passenger vehicles and four commercial ones by 2024, with plans to go all-electric by the end of the decade.
Market analysts believe that the discontinuation of the low-end diesel engine is part of the larger plan to go electric. We will likely see many more new engines going hybrid and eventually going fully electric.
