Cadillac Fans Looking for a 2021 CT6 Could Be Out of Luck

If it's a 2021 Cadillac CT6 you seek, look elsewhere—like in China. When did Cadillac stop selling the CT6 in the U.S.?

If you're having trouble finding a 2021
Cadillac
CT6 in the states, there's a pretty good reason for that. GM doesn't make the
Cadillac CT6
for the U.S. market anymore, but it's still being built in China.

The Cadillac CT6 was low-demand luxury sedan

It's not without good reason that GM ended production of the rear-wheel drive luxury sedan in January of 2020; Cadillac sold just under 8,000 of the CT6 in 2019. Sales were never really that great for the CT6 in general, with sales peaking at 10,542 in 2017.
Compare that with Cadillac's SUV sales; the automaker sold nearly 35,000Escalades and 50,000 of its XT5 crossovers. As long as people want SUVs, Cadillac and other domestic automakers will prioritize them—even in this age of electrification.

The CT6 was a throwback Cadillac

GM started making the CT6 in early 2016 in a bid to revive the classic take on the Cadillac. That entails a full-size, rear-wheel drive luxury four-door car—a configuration not seen since the automaker stopped producing the Fleetwood in the 1990s.
The Cadillac CT6 was available with 4- and 6-cylinder engines, with the option for a 4.2-liter 8-cylinder twin-turbo engine that produced 550 horsepower and 640 lb.-ft. of torque. It was also offered as a plug-in hybrid model with a 31-mile battery-only range.
The first model year of the Cadillac CT6 was fairly well-received, with critics lauding its attractive appearance, great handling and good value as far as luxury sedans are concerned. The publication noted, however, that it still fell short of its rival luxury sedans at the time.
That verdict had changed by the time the 2020 model year CT6 was released, with
Car and Driver
calling it "striking and engaging."
However, they also noted that it's not really a high-end luxury vehicle worthy of its price point—the publication said it was less roomy than its competition with less-than-stellar interior materials and an overpriced twin-turbo V-8 engine.

You can find a 2021 Cadillac CT6 in China

GM originally manufactured the Cadillac CT6 at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant before its discontinuation in the U.S. and the subsequent retooling of the facility for
electric vehicles
. Instead of moving CT6 production to another North American facility, GM sent production for the 2021 CT6 overseas to China.
But that doesn't mean you can still get it here; the Cadillac CT6 is now limited to the Chinese market. That means if you want to buy a new CT6, you'll have to either move to China or navigate the lengthy requirements and regulations to import one.
So if you're hoping to get a Cadillac CT6 in the states, you may want to wait for your market cohorts to start buying sedans and coupes over SUVs again—because it looks like GM isn't bringing it back stateside otherwise.
