BMW
has long been associated with sleek sedans and sports cars, with the huge BMW X7 something of an anomaly. However, BMW’s first full-size SUV has impressed the critics, emboldening the German automaker to go one step further.
The BMW X8 is due to be unveiled later this year, and while details are scarce, it is another full-size SUV, even bigger than its predecessor.
While fans are eager for more information, many people are wondering why BMW is moving in this direction. Especially at a time when rival brands appear more focused on preparing for an electric future.

Everything we know about the BMW X8

The BMW X8 will share its platform with the X7, so it’s likely to be similar in size. Spy shots suggest it is wider than its predecessor, but sportier in appearance, thanks to a lower roofline which tapers towards the rear.
CarBuzz
suggests the X8 will be bolstered by a big grille and double-stacked tailpipes. This makes sense, as BMW has promised increasingly bold designs on its high-end models.
While there will almost certainly be a hybrid version available, the gas-powered X8 will likely boast a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, capable of cranking out 523 hp. BMW has promised more information this year, but industry insiders expect the X8 to cost around $110,000—almost $40,000 more than a base model X7!

Why is BMW developing large SUVs?

The size of the BMW X8 has surprised many people. Why is BMW developing such a large, powerful SUV, while other carmakers seem focused on a greener, electric future?
BMW, it seems, is hedging its bets and playing both sides.
The all electric i4 has just gone on sale, and the company has announced it will stop making internal combustion engines at its main plant in Munich by 2024.
However, it will continue to produce ICE engines in other locations, and has not committed to a full phase out of fossil fuels. Instead, BMW has set itself a target of 50% of new car sales to be electric by 2030, and will only go all-electric if forced to.
Compare this to the likes of VW and GM, who have said they will only produce EVs from 2035, with or without a government mandate. BMW is banking on the phase out of gas cars to take longer than that, and if correct, models like the X8 will be well-positioned to take advantage.
