X5 is a fantastic luxury SUV. It is a vehicle that shines through its style and technology, and it earned impressively high scores in Consumer Reports' road test. Despite everything the BMW X5 has going for it, though, it was left off of the ‘10 Top Picks of 2022’ by Consumer Reports (CR). The idea of the X5 missing out on the list is odd, especially considering how glowing the Consumer Reports review of the BMW SUV was. Consumer Reports
states that it was left off for a very specific reason. Why was the BMW X5 left off of CR's list?
The CR 10 Top Picks list recommends top cars from different categories of vehicles, including cars under $25,000, midsized sedans, and more. If the BMW X5 were qualified for the list, it would probably be the pick for the top luxury midsized SUV.
However, Consumer Reports mentioned that the X5, along with Hyundai Tucson and other high-quality vehicles, would not be on the list. This is because they don't come standard with highway-speed automatic emergency braking (AEB).
It may seem like a minor technicality, but as safety features become more standard, it is important to consider what a vehicle has.
In addition to having eligibility that depends on AEB, CR also increased vehicle scores if they had certain driver assistance features. These features are not standard in vehicle design yet, and only the Ford Mustang Mach-E earned the extra points.

Even if it missed the award, the BMW X5 is still a great SUV
The BMW X5 might not have a spot on the Consumer Reports list, but that doesn't make it any less impressive of a luxury SUV. In their review of the current X5 model, Consumer Reports
gave the SUV an overall score of 90 out of 100. This ranks it as the number one luxury midsized SUV according to CR. Consumer Reports is known for its rigorous road tests for vehicles, and the BMW X5 scored a near-perfect 98 out of 100. Praise was given to the X5 for its stellar mix of performance and comfort. It is an SUV that can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6 seconds, and it's also remarkably quiet.
If there is any negative that Consumer Reports had about the X5, it could only be that AEB did not come standard. Otherwise, if you're looking for a luxury SUV, it's hard to argue that there is a better one on the market right now.
Cars that did make the Consumer Reports list
In place of the ineligible BMW X5 on the CR list, the Lexus RX earned the spot for the top midsized luxury SUV pick. The RX has an overall score of 83 compared with the BMW X5's 90. However, the Lexus RX is less expensive, starting at $45,570 compared to $60,600 for an X5.
If you're looking for a hybrid, Consumer Reports recommends the Toyota Prius and Prius Prime. Both Prius models combine Toyota's signature reliability with technologically impressive fuel efficiency.
For their midsized three-row SUV pick, CR went with the Kia Telluride, an SUV that has been compared to popular luxury SUVs. The Telluride's ride is about as comfortable as a BMW X5, and it has a more modest starting price of $33,090.
